This mornings newspaper headlines reported the murder conviction of Clara Harris. This lady found her philandering husband walking away from a hotel where he had just met with his mistress. Mrs. Harris was sentenced to twenty years for running over her husband three times. She claimed it was an accident. The incident reminded me of the accident victim who fell on his knife 68 times! Not quite an accident. At least the jury didnt think so.
Mrs. Harris suffers from what my Lynchburg psychologist friend Gentry Doyle titled toxic anger. Claras anger was dangerous to her as well as to the object of her anger. Dr. Doyle says in his book ANGER FREE that toxic anger usually hurts, and often destroys, the person who holds the anger. Perhaps thats why God told us not to let the sun go down on your anger! (Eph. 4:26)
Dr. Doyle has done a lot of research on toxic anger and understands its destructiveness. It cripples and kills millions of its victims.
Over the past few months, America has witnessed something Ive dubbed Toxic Envy envy that is strong, bottled up, and destructive. Envy so powerful that it lashes out against friends or family. Envy that transforms to hatred.
Perhaps President Bush is beginning to understand Toxic Envy as he watches Germany, Russia and France fight our efforts to stop the murder of Americans while ridding the earth of the tyrant who can now murder millions.
