Did a dozen reporters actually die in combat? I don't remember reading that anywhere before. It will be interesting to hear how they are memorialized compared to the military. Gee, I'm so cynical. We mainly heard about the two Americans, Michael Kelly and David Bloom. There were a number of journalists of other nationalities, mainly European or Aussie, who were killed.

"We mainly heard about the two Americans, Michael Kelly and David Bloom. There were a number of journalists of other nationalities, mainly European or Aussie, who were killed. "But were they embedded with soldiers or freelancers? A reporter who went into Iraq without the protection of the military is brave but perhaps a little stupid also. Of course they probably didn't know that Saddam had been torturing CNN's staff for years.

Not to mention Arab -- who were the ones killed at the Palestine? Then there were the non-embeds who thought their press credentials would save their lives.

The reporters who died were, for the most part, not embedded. The ones who are coming safely home have their military units to thank. Not a small reason for thankfulness, that. I heard one military member say that they would put their lives on the line to save anyone for whom they were responsible--and that included their embedded reporters.

And I think most of the ones killed were not embedded reporters.. they were just there on their own.
