Reporter's souvenirs seized

US Customs officials confiscated a large painting that a Boston Herald reporter, Jules Crittenden, brought back as a souvenir from the war in Iraq, but the artwork is not valuable enough to merit prosecution, a law enforcement official said yesterday.

If it's something cheesy, like Uday on black velvet, then he should be allowed to keep it.
(Perhaps he's still in shock since learning how subjective his journalistic objectivity was before he'd been shot at.)

Oh, come on. One of my colleagues is just back from the war, with a few Iraqi dinars as souvenirs. Was he looting? He just wanted a souvenir of the most harrowing couple of months of his life.
Don't misunderstand. Taking a painting is a bit much, and Crittenden shouldn't have done it. But I'm hard pressed to see any evil in picking up a few odds and ends.

You can get dinars ten for a penny at any bank.
They aren't worth the paper they are printed on.
Soldiers take things in war, and usually this type of sourvenirs, without monetary value, is it.
Reporters, journalists, and other scum who are there by the grace of the Defense Department deserve prison time.

What if someone barters for something? A few packs of smokes for some Baghdad trinkets or whatever? Does that get checked at the door as well?

Don't misunderstand. Taking a painting is a bit much, and Crittenden shouldn't have done it. But I'm hard pressed to see any evil in picking up a few odds and ends. I don't see any evil in it myself .. but have you read some of the articles from a few of these reporters?
Apparently some of THEM think there is evil in picking up a few things

This is funny, because Jules Crittenden was on TV the other day talking about the journalist's moral dilemma he experienced as an imbedded reporter when he pointed out some Uraqi soldiers so they could be shot to pieces by the American soldier in his armored vehicle behind the .50 caliber machine gun:
