Apparently my grandpa (my mom's father) had some sort of connection to Katherine Harris' grandpa (Ben Hill Griffin - through football, no doubt) - I've got a call into my parents right now to verify that story (and will share that with you after I talk with my parents again). Back in 1930, the members of the Lake Wales High School football team had somehow found out that my grandpa had played reserve quarterback for the Fighting Illini (big deal Big 10 school team even back then - my grandpa knew Red Grange as well). So they begged him to coach that year, having a record of something like 0 wins-28 losses the previous season. I guess they figured they had nowhere to go but up. In any event, my grandpa coached them all the way to the state championship game the next year and their record was 28 wins - 1 loss. The guys on that team all thought my grandpa walked on water ;-), and many of them were still alive to come to my grandpa's funeral when he died when he was 95 years old.
