URS Corp., a San Francisco planning and engineering firm partially owned by California Sen. Dianne Feinstein's husband, landed an Army contract Monday worth up to $600 million.

The award to help with troop mobilization, weapons systems training and anti-terrorism efforts is the latest in a string of plum defense jobs snared by URS. In February, the firm won an army engineering and logistics contract that could bring in $3.1 billion during the next eight years.

EG&G has been running the United States chemical weapons demiltarization plant in Utah for years. I'd be very suprised if they did not win the contract on the basis of experience only.

We need to learn to look before we leap.

Richard Blum, the husband of U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, sits on the board of Northwest Airlines and is a partner in the firm studying the impact of San Francisco International Airport's planned runway expansion on the environment.

Blum owns 40 percent of URS Corp., which was hired by the Federal Aviation Administration to prepare an environmental impact report on the runway expansion.

Blum also owns 6 percent of Northwest, the world's No. 4 airline, which makes money flying planes in and out of SFO.

After this conflict of interest was exposed by the Natural Resources News Service, Blum's spokesman said his boss wasn't even aware that URS had a contract to write the runway report.

From EG&G web site press release ( bold is mine) :

April 3, 2003 -- URS Corporation announced today that it's EG&G division has been awarded a prime contract with the U.S. Navy to provide technical support on two major Navy Joint Surface Warfare programs.

February 6, 2003 -- URS Corporation announced today that its EG&G/Lear Siegler division was awarded an indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity contract with the U.S. Army Communications-Electronics Command (CECOM) located at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey to provide engineering and logistics services for military weapons platforms.

August 23, 2002 -- George Melton, President & CEO of EG&G announced today that URS Corporation completed the acquisition of EG&G Technical Services Holdings, L.L.C. (EG&G Technical Services, Inc. and Lear Siegler Services, Inc.). This transaction significantly strengthens URS' position as a federal contractor and enhances our growth profile, principally in national and homeland defense.

It doesn't take a great brain to figure that the most experienced company in WMD distruction would be a good cantidate for lucrative Govt. contracts, therefore, a good acquisition cantidate.

I wish I had thought of it when Iraq had started boiling up.

"long-term strategic equity investment management firm"

That tells me that they spend their time reading the newspaper and thinking about what affect the news will have on business.

We investors need to learn to do the same.

Army contract goes to firm co-owned by Feinstein's husband

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -A planning and engineering firm co-owned by U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein's husband has been awarded a five-year Pentagon contract that could be worth up to $600 million.

San Francisco-based URS Corp. announced Monday that the Army had hired one of its divisions and a partner to help with troop mobilization, weapons system training and anti-terrorism assessment.

Feinstein's husband, Richard Blum, serves on the company's board of directors and controls about 24 percent of its stock.

The new contract is the latest lucrative defense job to be won by URS, which also works with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration among other federal departments. The firm was awarded an Army engineering and logistics contract in February that could be worth $3.1 billion over the next eight years.

``We are very pleased with this important win, which further expands our strong relationship with the Army,'' George R. Melton, president of the company's EG&G division, which will be performing the work.

A spokesman for Feinstein, D-Calif., declined to comment. Blum could not be reached for comment

Feinstein: No more tax cuts
Timothy Roberts

California's senior U.S. senator made it clear Tuesday that she will not support any more tax cuts. Speaking to a room full of technology executives and elected officials in San Jose, Sen. Dianne Feinstein, a Democrat from San Francisco, called any further tax cuts irresponsible.

"I'm worried about our deficit financing," she told a gathering of the Silicon Valley Manufacturing Group at the Fairmont Hotel. "That's why I've taken a position against any more tax cuts."

She says the Bush administration may seek a second $350 billion tax cut on top of an earlier $350 billion cut.

Although she voted for the 2001 tax cut of $1.3 trillion over 10 years, that was back when there were budget surpluses, she said.

"It doesn't make sense to cut taxes any further at this point," she said. "I will not support it."

Her husband's business contacts and dealings is the reason she will never seek higher office.

Minor correction:

Her husband's business contacts and dealings is the reason she will never be elected senator in this country! France, maybe.

When I was stationed at the Presidio, the worst form of torture was to stand at parade rest or attention listening to Feinswine, Boxer and Pelosi talk nonstop about their contributions (ha) to the Presidio and the Post to Park project. Not one time did one of them stop and talk to the troops after the ceremony. But they sure had a lot of love when the cameras were on.

Glass house syndrome . . .

The problem, or beef, IMO, is not that this is a dim owned co, but the double standard:

1. Ok for a dim, not ok for a Cheney.

2. Ok for Di Fi, ugly piece of leftist gun grabbing anti-war feces, to reap great financial benefit from military contracts.

Capish?

Good question. It wouldn't surprise me one bit. Someone
told me that one of our California Representatives was
heavily involved with the China Ocean Shipping Co. going
in at the Port of LA. (You all might have noticed by now that this is one BIG sore spot for me) It can't be stopped by anyone or anything!
