[history]
You remember Bernie. Back in 1984, he drew fear - or admiration - as the "subway vigilante," a revenge-of-the-nerds-type figure who shot and injured four minority youths he believed were trying to mug him on the train. He was acquitted of attempted murder, but spent eight months in the can for an illegal weapons conviction.

I read this story this morning. Goetz is a character. We have had a few characters think they can become mayor. Another one was Grandpa (Al Lewis) Munster. Its makes the mayoral race rather fun to watch!

Go, Bernhard Goetz! Eight months in jail for carrying a weapon was an injustice. Remember his trial. Thought he should have done a lot more damage to those critters.

I saw him in the strand book store once. I was looking at books with my boyfriend and we were both curious about one book and were discussing it and someone answered our question and we both looked up and there was Bernie Goetz. He's a real nice guy! Soooo quiet!

Did he really lose by only 1,300 votes?
If I lived in NYC I'd vote for him because he's in favor of lowering the cigarette tax.

I don't see how anyone could ever take him seriously as a mayor. I saw him speak at the TRT rally/protest at the UN.. I don't think he could win a council seat with that performance.
He's the poster child for NYC jury nullification, and I'll always respect him for that - but that's where I draw the line. He's lucky he did not do time for shooting that one kid a second time ("You don't look so bad, how about another"). He could have come out *big-time* as a voice to advance firearms law reform in New York. Instead he peddles electronics and nurses squirrels.
Pardon me if I am not too enthusiastic about this campaign after watching is 2001 run.

At a party back around the time of the shootings, I heard someone say, "The black community wants Goetz to walk." He was immediately surrounded and I couldn't hear another word of what he said.
But there really was no outcry from blacks over this incident--not like some of the recent reactions we have seen, mostly protests over shootings by cops. Any opinion as to why?

There was no outcry from most blacks - because they *did* want him to walk. Goetz's most outspoken defender on the jury was a black man.
The reality is that most working, conscious (rather than unemployed, undeducated state leeches) black people are tired of being victimized and would have done something similar to what Goetz did. The shame in the situation is that these folks never get TV time. The poverty pimps (Sharpton, Butts) and their Welfare soldiers are always out there, and always on TV.
I am sure I could have hundreds of people rallying for gun rights and lower taxes if we did not have to work.

Bernie fired the shots heard 'round the world!

But there really was no outcry from blacks over this incident--not like some of the recent reactions we have seen, mostly protests over shootings by cops. Any opinion as to why? I might have something to do with the fact that black criminals prey on victims of their own race more often than they do on others (not by preference, mind you, but because in inner cities most of the "victim pool" is black, because that's predominantly who lives there ....) They don't like being raped, robbed, or mugged any more than white people do.
They may be poor, but thay aren't stupid. They know what five black kids with screwdrivers in their pockets were up to on a subway car when they approached a lone white guy, and it wasn't to offer to repair his Sony Walkman.....

I know the average black person does not like crime or criminals. I should have put "community" in quotes. What I meant was the local black leaders who make everything into a racial incident--they were silent on this one, so the guy at the party was right.
