Actually, that is the view held for a long time. But there are some other scholarly views on dating the book of revelation that put it more in the time frame of A.D. 62-66.

Eusebius in the 4th century placed Revelation in the 90's, as well as John's exile to Patmos. What evidence do these scholars have that overturns his historical citation?
Without an early date to Revelation, this historical prophetic interpretation is not applicable.
Thanks for the link. Certainly, there is some fit between the dates of the events of the 1st century and those of Revelation, but you really need rock solid evidence to overturn the traditional dating.
