Simmons loved Ace, but the guy was careening out of control and screwing up on stage. He doesn't love Peter I sense.

I saw KISS once, and I left halfway through the show. They were awful. Sammy Hagar, who opened for them, was stellar. What a stage-savvy and geeked showman he is.

Stanley and Simmons were always the anchor of that franchise. They never replaced the "thing" Ace brought to the music and team however. It's a unique elixer that bands lose when they start falling away from one another. It can't be duplicated by bringing another lead guitarist in. Marshall Tucker wasn't Marshall Tucker after Tommy Caldwell died in a car crash. The Allmans never had that same wonder after Duane and Barry died ... Little Feat was still good, but they weren't really Little Feat without Lowell George. It's like the Magic led L.A. Lakers, the original Saturday Night Live cast or the 80s era Edmonton Oilers, they were a whole of irreplacable and uniquely important parts.

Sly was an innovator and damn good writer and performer. Prince, Bobby Brown, The Time, Grandmaster Funk, EWF and Hammer ... among many ... all borrowed stuff Sly invented from vaccuum vapor.

It was different from the Motown stuff, it was different from the Chicago and Blood Sweat and Tears horn stuff .... it was FUNKY and Sly did not mind being funky!

There is one great universal truth I cling to when the going gets rough ... when I go see a band, I know I'm going to hear: "Mustang Sally", "Sweet Home Chicago" and "Something by Stevie Ray Vaughn". If they have horns, you can pencil in "You can leave your hat on" and "I Feel Good". My requests for a 10 piece interpretation of "Watching Scotty Grow" has been roundly ignored howevver.

I don't fault him for that. I think we need a few brash people to shake things up once in a while. He has attitude and I like it. He lives for himself and makes no excuses. I guess it's my libertarian nature that admires that about him.

I saw Larry Graham's "Graham Central Station" at ASU many years ago. It was quite a concert. I was actually "in" "A Star is Born" with Babs and Kristofferson---me and 50,000 others. Anyway, to get us to be the crowd for the movie, they provided a free concert with LA Jets, Graham, Frampton, and one other band, plus Streisand sang. And I didn't even have to pay $1000 a ticket!

I would cherish Kristofferson's take on Ms. Streisand after festivities get smooth and working at the nearest bar. She's not his kind of gal in my judgement.

Hey, I got the VHS tape too. Brian Robby Robertson and Scott Gorham were trying to figure out how Gibson Les Pauls worked that night.

Phil Lynott was as charismatic a performer as anyone I've seen on stage. That band was tight as a debutante.

Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush opened the show. Frank may have been under the influence that evening. Or, perhaps song lyrics and playing in a group agreed key were optional.

The tape I have was from a London show. But ... you are correct, the CD was a mish-mash of heavily studio tweaked songs. From the Seneca College enormodome.

I actually have a Stevie Ray Vaughn VHS concert from another Toronto venue ... the Macambo Room perhaps?
