How right you are...I still recall telling my sweet wife when we first saw Clinton..."this hick jerk hasn't got a chance".
You would probably be surpised to know she "occassionally" reminds of this.
This also happened in '76 when we had another disasterous administration. The republicans look accross the aisle, see a weak field, and out of nowhere some obscure (largely unpopular) liberal governer from the south comes along and, with the help of the media, squeaks out the election.
Sadly, we live in the post-Clinton era where we realize that when it comes to the DemocRAT Party, there are no lower limits to behavior.
Not really, he and his blushing bride (gag! rawwlf!) had been planing their assualt on the nation for decades. In his case since he went to "Boys Nation" during President Kennedy's administration. Circumstances of 1991/92 may have let them advance their timetable a bit, that's all.
Funny you should talk of that, I just saw an old Saturday Night Live sketch of a Democratic Primary debate and the gist was that nobody wanted to run against Bush I because he was so strong so they were making excuses not to be elected to run against Bush and reminding the public what rats they are. Yes, Clinton was included in the mock debate too. Bush was really strong at that time and blew it.
He, Karl Rove, and Rasicott (sp) have made some really bone headed moves, and seem to continue to do so with Education, CFR, the assualt weapons ban, and now the RNC courting gays. Each item while triggers for the single issue folks who are luckily in a small minority, aren't sufficient to keep the base at home. But the compilation of all, especially if added to from now until the election could cause enough harm for enough of the base to sit one out and by default throw the election to the DemocRATs.
I hope not, but someone in the planning rooms better start paying attention. The right is not nearly as forgiving or as forgetful as the left.
