Laci Peterson's Husband Arrested

April 18, 2003

By KOMO Staff & News Services

MODESTO, CALIF - Scott Peterson was taken into custody in San Diego County Friday afternoon, arrested, according to a spokesperson for his family, for probable cause in the disappearance of his pregnant wife Laci, ABC News reports.

Earlier this week, the badly decomposed bodies of a woman and baby were found washed ashore in San Francisco Bay.

DNA analysis is still being done, but earlier police had said that once a positive identification was made, Scott Peterson would be arrested.

Laci Peterson has been missing since last Christmas Eve. Her husband Scott says he last saw her that morning when he left to go fishing at the Berkeley Marina -- not far from where the bodies washed up.

Her disappearance touched off a massive search, during which Scott Peterson's behavior raised some eyebrows. He sold his missing wife's car, considered putting their house on the market, and eventually admitted that while Laci was pregnant, he had been having an affair with another woman. Police did not name him as a suspect, nor did they clear him.

In January Peterson went on national TV to try to clear his name, saying he had nothing to do with Laci's disappearance.

But many were unconvinced. A sign on Scott Peterson's lawn appeared Friday that read: "The only one wanted in our deck of cards is Scott Peterson."

Modesto, Calif. police have scheduled a news conference for Friday evening with more details in the case.
