They weren't really applauding Polanski, they were indulging in the a bas les bourgeois that serves the artistic community to declare its superiority to the people who fund it. If raping a child is what it takes to show how different he (and they) are from us mere conventionally-moraled mortals, than raping a child is cool.

Leftism rejects traditional morals and believes in a ruling elite that is exempt from laws and mores governing ordinary people like you and me.
Therefore, Hollywood has no problem excusing the rape of a child by one of their own "elite."

It's just as simple as that.

I think the problem here is that people hear that Polanski "molested" or "raped" a 13 year-old and they think "It was statutory rape but probably consentual." No. Polanski forcibly raped the girl after getting her drunk and drugged and refused to stop when she asked him to. He also sodomized her. This isn't a Rob Lowe "I didn't know" type situation or a "she threw herself at me" situation. This is a grown man forcibly raping a 13 year-old girl against her will. That is what people need to know instead of the various ephemisms that often get tossed out when Polanski's case is discussed.

Because his crime was "just sex," an act that nearly everyone enjoys and that -- unless weapons, bruises and/or a nun are involved -- many people have trouble envisioning as criminal.

That is an excellent point! But there is another, which should not be diminished. I doubt very much that, under similar circumstances, the Amer. Assoc. of Electrical Engineers, or Amer. Physics Society would even consider an award, no matter how deep the papers are. In most professions, from dentistry to science to be "professional" is an integral part. To be free from crime is a minimal requierment of being professional.

Thus, it is also the exceptional position into which we place Hollywood and other celebrities that explains the outcome. No matter how power-hungry, manipulative, and vulgar Madonna is, people --- most of whom where not teenagers --- ran to shell out $150 for a pornographic book. It does not matter that Sean Penn cannot even speak, we allow him to speak and be heard. Jack Nicholson said during the Clinton affair referring to him, "I trust the guy, because he f---s. I never trust a guy unless he f---s." It is hard to find a gutter with a higher lever stupidy, besides immorality. But his quotes get into the press all the times --- because we read them, no matter how empty they are.

So why would the Polansky case be any different?

What needs to be added is that the academy award votes are ONLY by members of the screen actors guild. Not determined by the public nor in lots of cases by popularity. Only those that the studios, actors and other interested parties can lobby or pay to get their votes within the SAG. It's an inhouse thing yet these same people expect the public to bow, scrape, sigh, favor and watch their farce of presentations.

Roman Polanski took the 13 year old to Jack Nicholson's house. Did Nicholson participate? Wonder how Nicholson would feel if it happened to his child because ole Jacky has children now? Polanski is pedophile. If he ever returns, he should be arrested, sent to prison and the key to his release thrown away since he's escaped justice all these years.
