A tight community
Published: April 18, 2003, 05:50:13 AM PDT

On a late evening errand at about 8 p.m. Tuesday -- the day the newspapers reported the sad news from San Francisco Bay -- I drove by Laci Peterson's house and saw a small group placing candles at the memorial that had been in disrepair for weeks. They had fixed the large sign displaying her picture with the reward information and had cleaned up debris. And a man was mowing the lawn. Since Scott Peterson left the neighborhood, the yard has been maintained by neighbors, but lately had gone untouched.
On my return home, I walked the half-block over to her house. Everyone was gone, but in a few minutes the man with the mower returned. He had run out of oil and was now back to finish the job. A Channel 13 cameraman had arrived and asked his name -- Ralph Barkley, or so it sounded to me.

"Why are you doing this?" asked the reporter, holding the camera and its light on the mower as Ralph filled it with oil.

His voice held anger. "Laci would never have let her yard look like this. It just isn't right. She deserves to be remembered with respect. We are a tight community in this town, and we take care of each other."

The cameraman asked if he knew her. "No, but I have friends who went to school with Laci, and they told me she is a wonderful person. We need to remember her the way she lived."

As I was walking away, I heard Ralph say, once more, "We are a tight community in this town."
