Same thing happened to my aunt. Here it was an allergy to flour, or the gluten in it.

As for pizza, whenever I want some, there's something the low carbers at alt.support.diet.low-carb call a "meatza," which is a pizza with a ground beef or bulk sausage base. Some people make pizza using portabello mushrooms as a crust. Others take slices of pepperoni and put them on the bottom as the base. A few people just go ahead and order a pizza, but eat only the toppings.

Try tortillas from La Tortilla Factory as a crust. Tastes just like a thin crust pizza and the shells only have 3 net carbs each. :-)

Yummy!

It is a little ironic that the reason I first signed in to FR was to attempt to refute some falacious posts regarding Atkins news last summer.

In his life, there are lessons to be learned for those who wish to stand up to the "established" way of doing things.

Dr. Atkins' personality and vitality will be missed.

Dr. Atkins' "mission" should live on through the Atkins Center in New York, and through the thousands of people who have found guidance and benefit in his promotion of this lifestyle.

And yes, most of them - and I - were carb addicts. But once you break the addiction to them, it's amazing how you develop a "normal" appetite, learn what "real" hunger feels like, and be completely free from binging.

My wife and I will vouch for that. It's hard to explain the difference to someone who has never tried it. I think many many are addicted to carbs and the cycles that consuming them take them through.

RIP Dr. Atkins. God bless you for the gift you have given me via your diet. May God bless and comfort his family, friends and co-workers. I'm sorry I didn't have the chance to thank him in person when he was in Phoenix some time back. Missed opportunities.

My own doctor is the one who told me to use an Atkins-type diet. He said he'd rather see people eating a steak dinner than pasta. Said to avoid the "white" foods: bread, pasta, rice, and potatoes.

The only good white food is cauliflower! LOL!

Ah yes - the acid reflux! That was the FIRST thing to go. If I made a list of all the beneficial side effects of low carbing, a lot of people just wouldn't believe me. The folks at ASDLC occasionally compile lists that include not only the elimination of heartburn, but lessening of arthritis pains, anxiety/panic reduction, elimination of dizzy spells, better complexion, stronger and thicker hair, soft elbows (that one always gets a laugh), diabetes under control, and so much more.

We call wearing our old clothes, "Going shopping in my closet." Tee hee.

So, what do you think?

Exactly.

How do you explain to people that, before low carbing, there was no such thing as not being hungry, always wanting to eat, planning and plotting the next meal or binge, finding it inconceiveable to miss a meal, etc.

Before low carb, my life revolved around eating. Now - it's what I do 2-3 times a day to keep my body fueled, but it isn't all-important anymore.

I sometimes compare people like us to tribbles - we can never stop eating, even when the grain's poison to us. We starve to death in bins full of grain.

Yes! A month into the diet I realized I stopped having my daily heartburn attacks. That alone would've kept me on the diet even if I had never lost a pound.

Seriously, there *are* substitutes for potatoes and bread. One rather well known sub is called "fauxtatoes," which is basically a pureed cauliflower - add butter, roasted garlic, whatever. It actually tastes really good.

We tried fauxtatoes a couple times. They had potential, taste-wise. But nothing, and I mean NOTHING, smells worse than a half-head of cauliflower that has gone bad in the fridge! Good thing I had a FoodSaver to seal it up, or it would've stunk up the whole neighborhood waiting for the garbageman to come & put it out of its misery. I shudder at the memory. :-)

Maven, I noticed your comment about grain, and reflected back to your skepticism about the D'Adamo's blood typing theories. If you haven't read his books, I really think you may find them interesting, because one of his central themes at least for Type Os like myself is the problems caused by consumption of grains. Your earlier remarks about his views being conjecture, not established science, are certainly true, but personally I have found his ideas to be intriguing. You might too.
As I said in earlier posts, I am an admirer of Atkins for several reasons, even though I believe the jury is still out on whether a long-term ketogenic diet is the BEST diet. But I am adamantly critical of "mainstream" nutritional "science," with its "a calorie is a calorie" mentality. Regardless of which version of the low carb diet is ultimately shown to optimal, Atkins woke me up a couple of decades ago to the understanding that many of our health problems are the result of consuming far too many carbohydrates, particularly the highly refined ones, in our diet.
I saw your before and after photos, and congratulate you on your personal triumph. I think it is amazing how many people have posted on this board with stories of dramatic, often life-changing success in utilizing Dr. Atkins's basic advice, or the advice of other similar low carb advocates.

If they gave him glucose that could have helped finish him. I hope they didn't as his body would have freaked. I liked him as feel bad about his passing. I think he did a lot of good.

There are now low carb breads and pizza dough. It's not too bad as I have tried the breads. Also there is low carb pancake mix etc.

Anything that takes away my pizza and beer is bad!

Then you didn't give the diet much of a chance. I lost 105 lbs on the Atkins diet. And after the first couple of weeks, brought back things like beer and pizza. My critical carb level was 35. So, when I went out drinking and dancing, I would have a steak and as many as 12 Miller Lite beers. Or if I wanted pizza I subtracted the beer carbs.

Quite often after a weekend with beer and pizza, I would still lose 3 lbs over the weekend.

That's MY kind of diet!

On the Atkins diet, you bring back the carbs, that YOU miss the most. Beer and pizza, YES! But, you bring them back gradually, until you know your critical carbohydrate level.

I just switched from beer to Bulleit bourbon on ice. I can't vouch for my liver, but my palate is satisfied.
