CERSKA, Bosnia-Herzegovina (CNN) -- As forensic experts combed through suspected mass graves Tuesday, the stench of death spread over quiet hillsides in eastern Bosnia.

Skulls jutted from the excavated earth, and skeletal limbs -- many in rotting clothes -- protruded.

The excavations are the first in a three-month search for the remains of Muslims killed in the Bosnian Serb conquest of Srebrenica. The evidence will be used to build a case against suspects indicted by the International War Crimes Tribunal.
