You can file for an automatic extension to file your income taxes by phone until midnight.
I just did.
Enter 4868 in the form search box and then you'll bring up the form and instructions, plus the 888 number for filing by phone.
Wait for the very end of the automatic phone instructions to be sure you have actually filed.
Cheers!

Pathetic, late, humiliated, and saddened bump.
Next year I'll be better. (Yeah, right...)

Except that you also have to pay at least the amount of taxes which would be due if you were filing a 1040, which you can't do by phone. Otherwise big late penalties.

The April 15th deadline is like a bad movie. Watch the sheep...

I got my taxes done early this year. I mailed it on April 12th.

Seems like I just filed my tax return. Oh yeah ... I did after 2 extensions in October:)
This year was better, I sent it in 2 days ago...but then everything was still 'out' from last October!

LOL, I haven't filed before summer in 20 years!
Unfortunately, even when I'm due a refund I don't file until the summer. I take the automatic extension every year, and I'm so bad I send in the automatic extension form in March because I just figure I won't be sending my returns until July or August. But the April 15th lines at the post office crack me up. People really take that date seriously.
Cheers,
LH

The April 15th deadline is like a bad movie Income tax makes everyone a criminal until proven otherwise. When I started talking with people thirty years ago about abolishing it and using a national sales tax or value added tax instead, I'd just get blank stares.

Mailed mine in March and I got my state refund back last week. I forgot to sign my federal and sent back their letter requesting my signature last week. I probably delayed my federal refund a month. :(((

I chuckle at how so many people freak out over the 4/15 deadline.
The only useful purpose that extensions serve is in statute of limitation calculations. If you paid your 2002 taxes by 4/15, there can be no late filing penalty, extension or no extension. Unlike many state and business returns, the late filing penalty for individuals is based on the amount of tax owed.
Nevertheless, I dropped off my extensions at DFW at about 11:30 tonight (including mine). I like to keep my clients happy, and they're happier knowing that they've filed their extension.
My 'tax season' actually takes place from 4/16-8/15. That's when my clients' K-1s come in, and my most complicated returns are completed.
