As I Predicted, George W. Bush
Is Backing Bill Clinton's Gun Ban

TooGood Reports

April 15, 2003

In this column dated December 17, 2002, I predicted that President G.W. Bush would support the so-called assault weapons ban first promoted by former President Bill Clinton and Sen. Diane Feinstein back in 1994. Interestingly enough, the gun ban became law on the strength of a tie-breaking vote by then Vice President Al Gore. The ban is scheduled to sunset next year, but Bush is joining Clinton and Gore in supporting an extension.

Presidential spokesman Scott McClellan said, "The president supports the current law (the Clinton gun ban), and he supports reauthorization of the current law."

This must come as quite a blow to people such as the leaders of the National Rifle Association who campaigned heavily for Bush touting him as a "pro-gun" candidate. Since his election, the NRA and others have repeatedly reaffirmed their support for Bush, because he is "pro-gun." Well, now the mask is off!

I have tried to warn my readers that Bush is not a true conservative. He is not pro-life; he is not pro-family; he is not pro-Constitution. And now we know he is not pro-gun.

Instead of reversing the miserable policies of Clinton/Gore, Bush is helping to harden the cement around those policies. The gun issue is no exception.

The so-called assault weapons ban was the benchmark piece of legislation reflecting the anti-gun policies of people such as Clinton, Gore, Feinstein, and New York Senator Charles Schumer. It was also the number one target of the NRA. In fact, the NRA all but promised their supporters that a Bush presidency would help reverse this Draconian gun ban. Instead, Bush is pushing Congress to extend the ban.

A bill to reauthorize the gun ban will be introduced by Senator Feinstein in the coming weeks. It must pass both chambers of Congress to reach the President's desk. The best chance of stopping it will be in the House of Representatives. However, in order to defeat this bill, it must resist the power and influence of the White House. This will be no small task.

Not only is Bush betraying the pro-gun voters who helped elect him, he is breathing new life into a nearly dead anti-gun movement. Most political analysts credit Bush's pro-gun image as the chief reason he defeated Al Gore in the 2000 election. They also credit the pro-gun image of the Republican Party for helping them to achieve impressive wins in the 2002 congressional elections.

Now, Bush is giving new credibility to anti-gun zealots such as Schumer and Feinstein and is helping to reinvigorate the anti-gun momentum that had all but been put on ice.

However, the real question will be, "Will pro-gun conservatives continue to support Bush?" Bush is every bit the "Teflon President" that Clinton was. Conservatives seem willing to overlook anything he does, no matter how liberal or unconstitutional it may be. Will they overlook this, also?

If you truly believe in the Second Amendment and are willing to do something about it, I suggest you go to the Gun Owners of America website. They have a quick link set up which allows people an opportunity to conveniently send email to the White House about this issue. Go to the gun ban "alert" button. From there you can voice your disapproval with the President's decision to betray his constituents by supporting this new round of gun control.

Once again, the ball of freedom and constitutional government is in the court of the American people. Will they keep the ball and do something with it, or will they hand it off to the neo-conservatives at the White House? We'll see.

That's an interesting statistic. How sure are you that the colonies only had 3 million people? I don't even know what HCI is. I would cut out the labelling.

I have witnessed nationwide lawlessness created by an invasion of millions of illegal aliens...

Ho hum. Johnny-One-Note can't address an issue without mentioning the brown-skinned economic refugees he loves to obsess over.

Oh, you forgot to quote my entire post comrade. Here, I'll help you out....

I have witnessed nationwide lawlessness created by an invasion of millions of illegal aliens while President Bush and the rest of our so-called leaders, stand by and watch this epic crisis continue to escalate, at the same time our second amendment is being chipped away incrementally, one small step, one law, one regulation at a time. After thousands of gun laws, and more being considered daily, I think the goals of government are inordinately clear regarding our second amendment and other issues regarding our very sovereignty.

We're a long way from banning rifles

You really have no idea what you're talking about. "Assault Weapons" are rifles.

You've been around long enough. Use your imagination. How would you do it?

To answer your question, though, I would say that what we have been already doing is an excellent start. Education, truly alternative media, such as Fox News Channel, Freerepublic.com, word of mouth, Freep rallies, etc. The tide really is turning, but we must be ever-vigilant!

As far as this specific issue is concerned, I encourage all Freepers and Conservatives to take back the educational system in this country. Get a teaching job and educate.

After all, why should some idiot scum-sucking socialist collect all that money and benefits and not one of us? Do what they did; INFILTRATE.

When a modern army is surrounded by 80 million people who are well armed and PO'ed ... there are no front lines ... there are no logistics ... there are no places for those people who maintain the gunships and tanks, the people who fuel them, or the people who drive them to find safe haven ... particularly when it's some of their own they are up against. Force readiness ... moral ... and loyalty starts to deteriorate in such circumstances.

God forbid it ever comes to that.

Clearly, faced with an enemy army to defeat ... our forces are unstoppable. but, if 50,000 or 100,000 are surrounded on all sides by 80,000,000 who are well armed (as opposed to a few thousand) ... then it gets to looking like Fort Apache pretty quick.

Sure, a suicidal attack against a Cobra, or Apache or Abrams will not work. But that is not the type of fighting we are talking about. Listen to Travis McGee. His bonafides are without question ... he's been there in the teams and knows what he's talking about.

My bet is on the side with 15,000,000 sniper rifles and the will to use them despite loss if push comes to shove.

And compound that scenario with literally millions that look just like the other side....The confusion and chaos would be unbeatable....

The invasion helps keep the crime rate up and gang activity as well. As they shoot eachother, politicians get the ammo they need to ban guns.

HCI - Handgun Control, Incorporated.

I couldn't find colonial. Closest I found was 1800 - 5308483

That's still one out of 8-9 people.

I don't know. It seems to me that you are ignoring women voters, who will vote anti-gun rights hands down IMO. I don't really believe what you say is true , although I'm sure of your sincerity. Nonetheless, and it coud be a close call, I believe that the majority of Americans believe the anti-RTKBA rhetoric.

And I really can't see Democrats of any type voting for pro-gun Rpublicans, but this info is anecdotal. After all, I live in the "Blue country", where my votes are irrelevant, anyway.

I still think my previous posts are essentially correct.

Time will tell.

Listen, I love Fox News, but on this issue they're pretty weak. Bill O'Reilly is on record in favor of gun control, and Tony Snow has seemed amenable to it in the past.

Since you bring the subject up, though, it couldn't hurt for millions of gun owners, starting here at FR, to e-mail Fox insisting that they report this story. So far, I haven't heard a peep.

Bush won the heavily democratic UP of Michigan, as well as West Virginia.

His(Chuck Baldwin) PCP-addled mind has already come up with some psychotic theories that Bush is trying to take over the world, so his support for getting rid of this tyrannical law hurts our case by making us all seem to be wackos like him

Chuck Baldwin, has a simliar, small, but vocal audience here on FR, where they knee jerkingky scream, "I have been betrayed, might as well have Hillary as President, blah, blah, blah." They must like living in the dark, where a Hillary presidency would give you a Schumer Justice Dept. and a Cuomo as Chief Justice.

Actually he lost Michigan, but the point is valid nevertheless. Michigan's Democrat gun owners were undecided until late in the campaign, forcing Gore to waste time there instead of in the border states.

Huh, did you check out reply #447 of this thread. I guess not. Ashcroft came up with a proposal to help abate illegal immigration and terrorism and not a peep of support from your malcontnent crowd.

I know he lost Michigan, mainly since Detroit City and Flint has a massive turnout, but he won the UP.
