EIGHTEEN Kuwaitis held since the 1991 Gulf War were among prisoners in an underground shelter in Baghdad, Abu Dhabi satellite television reported today, quoting a former Iraqi colonel.
The men "are alive ... and in an underground shelter near the military tribunal in the Al-Khadra district," the channel said without naming its source. Kuwait says 605 people disappeared during Baghdad's occupation of the emirate in 1990-1991 and believes many were kept in Iraqi jails.
The emirate on Saturday offered a reward to anyone who helps determine the fate of the missing people.
"We have no information on the whereabouts of the POWs after the fall of the Iraqi regime, but we hope for a speedy solution to end the suffering of the POWs and their families which has lasted for more than 12 years," said First Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah.
Apart from Kuwaiti nationals, the 605 people missing or taken prisoner include 14 Saudis, five Egyptians, five Iranians, four Syrians, three Lebanese, one Bahraini, one Omani and one Indian, according to Kuwaiti authorities.
Saddam's regime said there had been prisoners, but that it lost track of them during an uprising by Shi'ite Muslims in southern Iraq following its retreat from Kuwait.
The ousted Baghdad regime had also claimed 1142 of its nationals had been missing since the Gulf War.

I know a lot of people (on the left) don't want to hear this, but this revelation alone is a casus belli. I could list half a dozen more that have nothing to do with "illegal" weapons. Whether or not weapons are found this war was fully justified and long overdue. If you don't agree, ask some of these newly liberated Kuwatis.

You are right... I feel stupid that we didn't pound this point before... I guess maybe we assumed the Kuwaitis were too optimistic and the personnel in question were dead?
Illegally imprisoning coalition prisoners invites a "rescue mission" and as large a supporting cast as the liberators see fit.
There are actually so many justifications for this war, any one of which would be sufficient to justify action, that it becomes hard to choose between them.

Hopefully we find Speicher too.

If this is authenticated this really would be evidence of a significant material breech. A full accounting of the 600+ Kuwaitis was one of the ceasefire conditions covered by a U.N. resolution, and I am almost sure reiterated in UNSC 1441.

Whether or not weapons are found this war Patience, we'll find them, Saddam didn't give up $150 billion over 10 years or so for no reason.

I'll second that.....it would be the best news yet to get this man home safely after all these years. God Bless him.....who knows what he's been through.

He has been on my mind since the last POWs were released.
To: Constitution Day
He's been on my mind, too, especially when so many of the media outlets are saying these 7 were the last U.S. P.O.W.s--they aren't. There's still one more. (at least)

I hadn't heard of these POWs until today. Just another reason Saddam had to go.

This hasn't been verified yet by anyone (press or military) on the ground in Baghdad. It might be printed in the Australian, but the source is an Arab TV network, in a world where rumor, fantasy and conspiracy are given the same weight as facts.
India's Hindu Newspaper is reporting that Abu Dhabi is "quoting Iraqi defence sources," which makes the story even more bizarre.
