A woman on her way to market came upon some young boys tormenting a snake with rocks and sticks. She chased the boys away and picked up the snake and took it home with her. She nursed it back to health and they lived together for a while.

One day as the woman reached out to feed the snake it bit her. "You have bitten me and you are poisonous and now I shall die. I took you in and cared for you. Why did you do this?"

The snake replied, "Because I'm a snake. This is what I do. And you knew I was a snake when you first took me in."
