Catholic leader wants Bush to be tried(Barf Alert)(Action Required)

The director of a U.S. Catholic archdiocese ministry wants to put President George W. Bush on trial for war crimes because of his Iraq policy.

In his most recent newsletter, Frank Fromherz, of the Peace and Justice Commission for the Portland Archdiocese in Oregon urged like-minded Catholics to back an ecumenical group's request that "the International Criminal Court indict and prosecute our own president as a war criminal."

Fromherz and the commission's other two employees lost their jobs this week along with 15 others in a round of archdiocese layoffs attributed to budget cuts.

But Portland Archbishop John G. Vlazny apparently had warned Fromherz, who served as director for 12 years, that his antiwar activism was pushing the limits.

Spokesman Bud Bunce said the archdiocese has never addressed the issue of whether the president should be tried for war crimes.

"It doesn't sound like something the archbishop would say," Bunce told WorldNetDaily. "His main comments about the Iraqi situation have been to encourage Catholics to pray for a quick end to the war, and for those involved."

Fromherz, 49, said in his April 2 dispatch: "We must be in solidarity with the social power of active nonviolence among the people who make their home along the Tigris and Euphrates. Our first and foremost challenge, to which we are a coalition of the willing, is to bring home our troops and, yes, join the Fellowship of Reconciliation (www.forusa.org) in requesting that the International Criminal Court indict and prosecute our own President as a war criminal. The Administration's action is a moral outrage, not a matter of opinion."

Fromherz said archdiocese officials told him Tuesday in a personnel session that he was fired because he violated his role as an agent for the archbishop, the Portland Oregonian reported.

The principle of agency means that an archdiocese director is an extension of the archbishop.

Fromherz said Tuesday in a message to supporters following his dismissal, "In my view, I have been a good agent of the Good News."

"I shall continue to do so to the best of my ability," he said. "I am sure that Archbishop Vlazny likewise is striving to live the Gospel to the best of his ability. I sincerely hope that all who speak for peace in this time of Superpower arrogance will find their voice and the courage of their convictions."

Vlazny is a member of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, which had opposed the war, stating that it did not meet "just war" criteria. But since the conflict began, the bishops have called for a quick end and expressed hope that the "people of Iraq will soon enjoy a peace with freedom and justice."

Under the auspices of the archdiocese, Fromherz has helped organize antiwar protests in Portland, including one planned for today.

In an April 3 note, Vlazny wrote Fromherz: "I've told you I don't want the archdiocese sponsoring rallies like the one you describe for April 12. You know I won't be there."

Fromherz told the Oregonian that the decision to dismiss him, "which is quite abrupt, could send a chilling message to someone in a parish who doesn't see eye-to-eye with the archbishop."

Some Oregon Catholics, while expressing satisfaction with Fromherz's removal, note that he has been allowed to espouse his ideas for the past dozen years.

Stephen Brady, who leads a Catholic watchdog group in Illinois, characterizes Catholic peace and justice ministries across the nation as being "for the most part politically driven and left-leaning."

Noting the Jesuits' influence in South America with Marxist groups, he sees a long history of Catholic ties to leftist movements.

"It's a matter of history, there is no denying it," said Brady, president of Roman Catholic Faithful. "It's coming to the surface in the morally bankrupt condition of the hierarchy. Look at the bishops' need [last year] to vote on whether a priest who rapes a child should be allowed to wear a collar after one incident."

A Jesuit priest, Fr. John Dear, is a recent former executive director of the Fellowship of Reconciliation, the 85 year-old interfaith group that wants to try President Bush for war crimes.

The international pacifist organization was formed in an attempt to stop the outbreak of war in Europe in 1914. According to its history, in 1940, it also encouraged "nonviolent resistance to World War II."

Yes, there is, they voted collectively to come out against the war. There seems to be a snakes nest here.

I went to a Catholic high school, and I was subjected to quite a bit of leftist drivel. We had to take a class called Social Justice, which was a real hoot. I remember one session where the teacher brought in bags of cookies and candy, then divided us into two groups: the Wealthy Nations and the Poor Nations. There were only about five kids in the Wealthy Nations, and the remainder of the class (about 15-20 kids) were the Poor Nations. You can see what's coming, right? Yep, you guessed it: the Wealthy Nations had the run of most of the classroom and they got to stuff themselves with cookies and candy, while the Poor Nations were crammed into one corner of the classroom and only got one tiny cup of milk to share among themselves. She told us she wanted to show us how the wealthy nations (but mostly the U.S.) consumed more than their fair share of the world's wealth and resources.

This same nun also taught a class called Challenge Of Peace, in which she preached complete disarmament of all nuclear weapons. We had to view pictures of Hiroshima burn victims and read all kinds of disarmament propaganda. Naturally Ronald Reagan was made to look like a dangerous, demented warmonger. Harry Truman didn't fare too well either, if I recall correctly. Things got to the point where I was afraid she'd make us write a letter to Japan apologizing for dropping the bomb. Thank goodness she didn't, because I think my parents would have yanked me out of there in a hurry.

The real kicker is that these classes fell under the general heading of "Religion," yet the subject matter had precious little spiritual content.

San Antonio archbishop orders anti-war priest to raise U.S. flag
By Associated Press, 4/11/2003 11:06

SAN ANTONIO (AP) A Roman Catholic priest who removed the U.S. flag from in front his church was ordered to put it back up by the archbishop, who said anti-war views shouldn't be forced on the public.

Archbishop Patrick Flores issued his order after receiving inquiries about what some Our Lady of Grace congregants say the Rev. John Mannion's latest display of anti-United States sentiment.

Church members say that Mannion often criticized America during sermons and kept the flag at half-staff. Last week, he simply removed it from the church in La Coste, 20 miles southwest of San Antonio.

''I have advised Father Mannion that the American flag must be restored at full height to its usual place of honor immediately,'' Flores said Thursday.

Even The Onion couldn't come up with this kind of raw material.. The possibilities are endless!

It could be like that recurring "kenny" gig on South Park, or "Spy Vs Spy" from Mad Magazine.

Every week they could try some new way to arrest Dubya!

LOL! LOL! This is great..

Interesting that he included "at full height" in this request..

Makes one wonder what he was anticipating..

I am surprised he didn't tack on: "And in it's proper orientation.. "

And I want a billion dollars, a pony and Charlize Theron in a sheer nightie. I think my goals are slightly more realistic.

Apparently the phrase "war crime" has completely lost it's original meaning and can now mean just about anything. I guess I better be careful about giving my boss a dirty look when he criticizes my work or he might charge me with a "war crime".

Wow, I went to Catholic School too and never got that at all.

We were taught (this was a while ago) that we must master our own spiritual being first and then if called upon by God then to seek service with the church in line with our calling. Nations rich or poor was described as part of the secular world and that the church transcends these secular things to reach out and minister to the poor of spirit. There are just as many poor of spirit in the rich if not more than the poor; in fact we were constantly drilled on this in fact with lots and lots of quotes supporting this position from the Bible.

I am shocked on these changes in Catholic education.

These ministries still need to be watched carefully. Along with the so-called 'charitable' businesses, such as Catholic Charities, they are powerful lobbies for the uncontrolled, mass immigration of impoverished people into America. The consequent costs to the American taxpayers are enormous, and the social and economic havoc wreaked upon America's working poor, who must live with these masses of third-world poor, is awful, just awful.

These Social Justice Ministries are for the most part representing a deliberate subversion of the Church and its mission of salvation through the blood of christ. The individuals leading the charge are often people who came from Marxist backgrounds (indeed, in the old Soviet days a healthy number of them were Soviet moles and infiltrators), and deliberately entered catholic service with the singular mission of co-opting their moral authority on the political issues. They have no real love of Christ, just of worldly secular revolutions that foist their elitism on the world.

This guy deserves far more than a simple firing. How would he like a taste of his own judgmental medicine?

Excellent post, Paul. I totally agree with you.

And have you noticed that there was no mention of the real criminals, i.e. Saddam? These communist sympathizers are a disgrace to the Catholic Church!

All of these "Social Justice" fools are frauds. They've been wrapping their leftist agenda in "religious" nitwittery for eons.

Yes, I do believe in a "Higher Power"...it's just not the one man (i.e., Pope) created by those esconced in a gold plated Roman church.
