Shira law under Islam appears to be the only alternative to our system that's still vaguely close to being alive.
It's fortunate that we have the examples of Iran, whose people consistently vote for reform, and the widely loathed Taliban, to convince Iraqis that theocracy isn't such a hot idea.
I think if we get the truth out about those subjects, the Iraqis will most likely vote in an American style democratic system.

A very insightful article, although I can't imagine writing an article on the subject of Peace through Power (strength) without mentioning Ronald Reagan.

...Can Islam, with its tendency toward religion-dominated government, produce societies grounded in freedom? That's a question that's been answered for generations with a resounding "no" by diplomats, bureaucrats and politicians all over the West. Bush's answer is a surprising "yes." "It is presumptuous and insulting," he said in the February speech, "to suggest that a whole region of the world -- or the one-fifth of humanity that is Muslim -- is somehow untouched by the most basic aspirations of life. Human cultures can be vastly different. Yet the human heart desires the same good things, everywhere on Earth. In our desire to be safe from brutal and bullying oppression, human beings are the same. In our desire to care for our children and give them a better life, we are the same."...
Great vision and statesmanship from George W !

There are certainly risks - the biggest one of these being that democracies definitely can make decisions against our interests. One did in Turkey. And just like we did there, we're going to have to learn to suck it up and accept it. If we can do that we'll be worthy of the power that's dropped into our laps.

Are you suggesting that the existence of Iraqi looters somehow invalidate the author's claims? How?

It doesn't seem to be working too well.Give it time and if necessary a few more examples.

"Why are our troops letting them? What's going on with this war?"Our military is not going to be the police. It was never planned that way. It was only recently that orders were given to stop looters. We don't have the forces necessary to be the police. Besides, the objective of our military was and still is regime change. What the heck do you think was going to happen when the regime fell? Security takes priority. The civil planning people are on the job but they can't do anything without security.
We don't even control the whole city of Baghdad yet.

Kurds are a good example... They are democratic and could help in forming and molding a workable system. I just hope petty squabbling that is so common in the Arab world isnt going to stop what we shed blood to promote.

After 30 yrs of opression you go out and destroy a statue of a person who would slice your moms tongue out for looking at him wrong. The guy hasnt been confirmed dead so many are staying home or away from jubilance out of fear...
