[history]
AN AMERICAN flag logo adorns the upper left corner of the screen. Dramatic stand-up-and-salute drumbeats pound away under regularly scheduled updates. Gung-ho, self-aggrandizing commentators behave like cheerleaders sans the pompons. Dissenting viewpoints get summarily crushed with the verbal equivalent of bunker-busting bombs.

(It should be pointed out that Fox's ratings, while impressive in the cable world, still fall significantly short of those posted by nightly newscasts on the major networks.)
Funny how this never came up as a disclaimer when it was CNN riding the top of the cable news ratings.
This is such a whiney "sour grapes" piece about FoxNews that I don't even know where to start. Of course, I doubt that many readers of this rag would watch FoxNews anyhow.
It must really irk these liberals to know that FoxNews is cleaning the clock of every other news show or news network out there. For example, the traitorous Dan Rather and CBS registered a 1.9 rating earlier this week! I predict that within the next five years, the three broadcasting networks (CBS, NBC, ABC) will ditch their news organizations altogether and stick to the insipid sitcoms and "reality" shows that the morons still watching them have come to expect.

a lot of the criticisms are, in my estimation, valid. whatever fox is, and i have it on right now as i do usually, it is not the network of record.

Over the course of the conflict, Fox viewers have witnessed very few images of anti-war protests happening across the United States and in other countries, or of civilian casualties, or, for that matter, any Iraqi citizens who might not welcome allied forces with open arms. Is this "fair"?Why wouldn't it be fair? The anti-war protesters make up maybe 1% of the population. So FoxNews rightfully gave them about 1% of their time. It is the other media outlets that gave these protests far more coverage than they merited.

"Dissenting viewpoints get summarily crushed with the verbal equivalent of bunker-busting bombs. "
I suppose Fox should take fair and balanced lessons from CNN's shining example of unbiased commentary--James Carville.

Yeah, Fox News is biased. They are the only true Pro-America channel. I like my news fair and balanced, but not if that means an "internationalist" viewpoint.

Two pieces of objective, accurate journalism 'embedded' here ...
(1) "But it is also clear, for the most part, Fox lags behind when it comes to coherent, well-rounded perspective. Instead, it is much more interested in following its own unconventional formula for success, a formula that primarily consists of these elements: "
(2) "Col. Oliver North issues starry-eyed accounts of his Army bunkmates. "
the author HAS to bad mouth FOX and I coulda sworn Ollie was with the Marines...

FoxNews does run rather lean but I'm sure FoxNews will improve more in the years ahead, especially since they are sure to cash in with more advertising dollars now that they have proven themselves to be the number one channel. The fact is that so many Americans have hungered for a news outlet that is not skewed with a liberal bent that they will watch FoxNews in spite of its present shortcomings. It will get better.
In fact, I'm pretty happy with their prime-time coverage. My main complaint with them is that they become repetitive due to their limited resources. That will soon change.
FoxNews has won a lot of new viewers during this war that had not previously been familiar with folks like Bill O'Reilly and Sean Hannity. I think once the war is over, many of these new viewers will be sticking with FoxNews. I would not at all be surprised if FoxNews started achieving higher ratings than ABC, NBC or CBS in prime time at some point.

Folks, the exact reason I listen to FNC is because it is pro american and gives our side of the news. Considering their rartings I must not be the only one that agrees with this assesment. I will not listen to CNN, ABC etc because they are anti american.
To: SamAdams76
You were correct to add the 'sour grapes' caveat.
I am betting that if CNN ran the same type of operation, down to the gnat's eyelash, that FNC is running, we would see a highly laudatory and supportive column by this same writer.

I thought Ollie was with his Marines.......... :)
Sour sour sour grapes.............
To: Blueflag
Nice catch. Obviously the author didn't spend very much time researching his subject or he would have known that Ollie North is embedded with the Marines, not the Army. Guess this author had an agenda and isn't very "fair and balanced."

I dearly love Fox News, but I really wish that Shephard Smith was about 20 years older and about 40 years more mature. His gleeful antics in the midst of a war have me reaching for my remote far more than what I'd like to.
Re. whether it is the network of record: I believe it can be but it can't go overboard with its "news" guys like Smith and clearly is doing that during the war. Commentators can yell and carry on all they want so Hannity can say whatever he wants to. (Did anyone challenge the hot air emenating from the Clinton loving crowd on CNN like Carville and the Forehead?)
But Roger Ailes, please do this for me, put Shepard Smith out to play with the other kids and not on my TV screen parading as a reporter. He is a boy, not a man.
As for the best reporter on TV, Britt Hume, hands down. But as my buddy says, he needs to have a cup of Joe before he goes on the air because he looks so sleepy.
Long live Fox News.

Still, the commentators rule. Fox does less news and more talking about the news than any other network. This is unfortunately true. They need to do a LOT more straight news reporting, if they bill themselves as a news channel.
