I don't see that interpretation as being a "stretch" at all. Perhaps I am too literal-minded, but I tend to believe that people mean exactly what they say- especially in unguarded momemnts (Perky Katie was apparently under some time pressure to get these final comments/questions in).

I don't really see any OTHER possible interpretation, than that she is hoping that Sadam escaped to Syria.

It is no such thing.
Grammatically incorrect, but a common mistake made by the uneducated.

The meaning, in its incorrect form, however is clear and unambiguous.
