A surge in the number of illegal immigrants apprehended at Fort Huachuca appears to have been addressed - for now - in a meeting between military officials and the U.S. Border Patrol.

The fort's spokeswoman, Tanja Linton, said 608 undocumented immigrants have been picked up on the post this year.

The fact that a military base is seen as a weak point on our border by intruders really says something about the officers we have running our garrisons. They are completely infected with peacetime thinking. Ft. Huachuca was a frontier post; Army commanders should still think of themselves as frontier commanders, always being threatened by those outside the gates. If a Colonel or a General can't keep a base secure, how in the hell can he offer criticism to a Lieutenant Colonel, Captain or Lieutenant about how well they keep an assembly area secure?

"Since the war broke out, no, nothing has changed yet."

To date, Border Patrol officials report more than 32,000 apprehensions in the sector this fiscal year, which began in October.

What he didn't say was "258,000 have gone by us unapprehended. We did catch our normal 1/10th"

GREAT NEWS!

It would be if it were true, but it isn't. Cochise County is still being overrun by marauding invaders.

Illegal aliens and drug smugglers prefer to cross through Federal lands. They know they are all sparsely guarded and they don't have to worry about local law enforcement or the civilian border groups.

Perhaps he's not concerned about it.

Jim Rob isn't too concerned about this occurance so it must not be worthy of Republican thought. I would like to be able to spend just a couple of hours discussing this situation with him. You know one of those, I bring all my paperwork kind of meetings and ask him to cast off the old thoughts and start anew examing whether this is something to be concerned about or not. I am not prejudiced against any legal immigrant but these illegals that we support just stick in my craw.

Now that is truly the man I would love have explain to me every political advantage of letting those illegals into America to me. Have him explain the true advantages to you and me just exactly how keeping a constant flow of illegals traveling back and forth across our unprotect border is to our benefit.

I don't give a squat what the advantage is I just need someone in authority to explain it to me. The way they are doing it now seems deceitful because they refuse to discuss it out in the open.

How do they expect me to give my hard cash to help them get re-elected when they refuse to discuss the one issue that I consider to be the biggest single danger to my family? Damn this deceit makes me mad!

"Fort" Huachuca is largely wilderness - desert mountainscape, running uninterrupted into the Coronado Nat'l Forest and then into Mexico, with no particular lines of demarcation between any of them.

Fencing and patrolling the boundaries of the Fort would cost millions of dollars and take hundreds of men.
Putting up a fence along the Coronado Forest would make a lot more sense.

Or they could put up another little wooden palisade like in the old days...

"ATTENTION: GEORGE BUSH. Why won't you even mention this invasion of America?"

Abject (illogical) fear of alienating the (illegal) Hispanic vote, which isn't going to vote GOP anyway.

I guess had the the wrong kind of post in mind. Is there any permiter around the more important parts of the base? Or could someone just come in and end up anywhere on post?

Most party movement types are convinced that if they just move closer to the center (i.e., adopt Democratic party ideals), they will win the Hispanic/black/single mother vote. Check out certain threads on FR-- they are more than willing to throw away the traditional Republican voters (white males, especially) in order to woo this constituancy. I wish them the best of luck, but I predict miserable failure. For me, I won't be playing the game anymore. I voted for Bush because I was told that he was at least better than Gore, but I fail to see how Gore could have possibly been worse on immigration. Just last week the Bush administration announced it would never do anything so egregious as deport the illegal Muslims they had detained here in this country. We will go halfway around the world to kill them, but they are just fine right here in our backyard, so long as they are living next to you and not me.
