ANTIWAR: MOVEMENT, OR CULT?
New York Post ^ | April 10, 2003 | MARK GOLDBLATT

Edited on 05/26/2004 5:13:16 PM PDT by Jim Robinson. [history]

THREE weeks into the Iraqi War, the cancerous Ba'athist regime has been destroyed, and the hunt for Saddam has become a bunker-buster version of the carnival game in which the chipmunk's head pops up through a hole in the board, and you clobber him with a mallet.

They will drift away from Iraq, one by one now, silently, to look for their next 'battle' against 'The Machine', 'Capitalism' and 'Oppression'.

My next guess is they will start to take up the cause of North Korea. They will have a problem, because North Korea will be much, much more suspect about letting ANY westerners in to propagandize and 'shield'.

The phenomenon here will be the same as seen in many other countries.

The leftists are full of shit when they say they are interested in "the people of _______". They only want to donate time and money and assist through official channels when the people live under oppression. When they are finally freed from oppression, as in Nicaragua, these do gooders just leave for another destination.

THEY HAVE NO INTEREST IN HELPING 'THE PEOPLE' IN COUNTRIES THAT HAVE LEFT TYRANNY UNDER U.S. ASSISTANCE

What a bunch of phonies! They just used the Iraqi people as tools for their political points. They could not care less. They will NEVER stay behind and keep assisting the Iraqi people through aid and development programs under a US interim administration.

To view this as mere idiocy would be wrong. People who believe such things are, in reality, clinging to their faith, clinging to a set of beliefs that infuses their lives with meaning, that connects them to a higher purpose, that makes them feel a part of something larger than themselves.

Folks, I have family who are deep into this cult, and this description hits the nail on the head. There has been nothing but deep sighs, and dispair that the imperialist U.S. has conquered the oppressed people of Iraq. I have given up trying to reason, or engage them as they have already drunk the kool-aid and there's no turning back.

It dawned on me a few weeks ago that the ANSWER has something in common with Saddam. Saddam is a Ba'athist a Socialist party. These guys can not stand the idea of another Socalist failure.

Have you shown your family the communist web sites and communist threads on DU orchestrating these cults. Maybe they need a real jolt, rather than reason. Don't forget to remind them about the bad points of communism, ie no free speech and closed borders.

It's a constant, uphill struggle to maintain this particular faith in light of the manifest truth that America is the most benevolent world power in the history of the planet. The antiwar movement, thus, should be ignored, or pitied, or even ridiculed, but not condemned too harshly.

I differ on this one point - I beleive that the antiwar effort, as presented and backed by ANSWER and the like, should be condemned with great harshness. Their goal isn't anti-war anyway; its anti-America, anti-Capitalism, and anti-Bush. Its easy to see through their motives.

I know the feeling. I have family that are in the left cult too. They cant think for themselves without first checking the party line on the talking point, and are virtually obsessed with conspiracy theories about republicans.

I firmly side with the cult theory. Always have.

That is so correct. Socialism has always failed. It is a flawed principal and goes against the grain of that which is human nature. This isn't just about the failure of Saddam's socialist/totalitarian regime; it is also about the failing French and German socialist societies which have come to rely on cheap Iraqi oil and slave-labor to prop up their otherwise low-productivity societies. France in particular has coasted on the backs of their brutal puppet, Iraq.

That is assuming that their views are based on beliefs with which one could reason. These are hard-core Noam Chomsky, Ramsey Clark types who personally know these people. It is their religion, not their politics. They truly believe that 9-11 was a plot by the government to create the excuse for an imperialistic takeover of the oilfields throughout the ME and Asia, and that more "Pearl Harbor" actions will be forthcoming in order to extend their [our governments'] jack-booted raw, naked power.

Help.

What a bunch of phonies! They just used the Iraqi people as tools for their political points. They could not care less.

"Oppressed people" are only players in their own dramas. I tell you, they care NOTHING about the tortures inflicted by Saddam on his people. Their only care is when the malevolent U.S. intervenes to impose its power on these oppressed "people of color."

I am not kidding, it is this seriously delusional.

It is for this reason that I came to the conclusion that leftist/liberalism is a mental illness. It is a NEED to be adverserial. It masks great anger. No entity can live up to the standards which they impose ON OTHERS.

It is a way of avoiding looking at themselves.

Right about now, the useful idiots are looking for a new cause to champion, and North Korea is looking for useful idiots to champion their cause in the West.

The usual socialist suspects will suddenly discover that two million North Koreans have died of famine, almost all the rest are barely living as it is, and guess who's to blame for the suffering of the innocent women and children of North Korea?
