Good Morning.

This is the Daily Thread of Operation Iraqi Freedom - Situation Room - LIVE THREAD.

It is designed for general conversation about the events of the day. In depth discussion of events should be left to individual threads - but links to the threads or other articles is highly encouraged. This allows us to stay abreast of the situation in general, while also providing a means of obtaining specific information.

Please have mercy on us dial up limited FReepers! Limit the big graphics, post links instead. A brief description of what the graphic is would help!  If you post graphics, please "size" them so that our browsers continue to load the rest of the thread!

< img src="http://www.army.mil/cmh-pg/daseal2.jpg" alt="Army Logo" width="151" height="150" >

To all who helped this get started and keep it running, thank you!

Special thanks to Null and Void for keeping these threads running on the weekends, Mo1 for the screamer, the AdminMods for their tolerance, mhking for the video links, Ragtime Cowgirl for her Exclusive Live Transcription Service™, Fledermaus for his 15 minutes of fame, and, of course, Belly Girl...

Well you sure have been following my posts haven't you? (that was about the third time you replied to something I posted to someone else!)

Please, don't flatter yourself. I saw my name and responded. Perhaps you should back off and let the issue die,

For someone who complained that they did not find much interaction when they posted, you sure have some replies to you now, don't you?

I did not complain about interaction...I said that this thread developed into a 'chat' thread.

It's a shame you had to pick a few ladies to personally attack to get some reaction to your "contributions" to this thread.(by the way, personal attacks are aganst the rules???)

Personal attacks????

I am particularly offended with your treatment of Soldiersgirl.

Solidergirl said I failed to understand...I responded...why are you offended?

Me, I could care less what you have posted to me. I think eventually you will offend enough people, and they will not reply to you at all.

Thank you for being open minded....

CNN has pictures of northern Iraq. Long lines of men, former Iraqi soldiers, walking along the roads & headed home to Baghdad. CNN said these men come from units whose leaders simply left the fight. Good to see.

If you watch in the background, the farmer is out on his tractor, gathering his grain....so nice and normal.

(oops, sorry cyncooper)

?

As you said, we are free. I never said you can't say it. Just advised on how it appears.

And I might say, invoking my name without flagging me, is, well, I was surprised to see it.

Is anyone watching this???

CNN interviewing "escaping" Iraqi soldiers, walking home from northern Iraq to their homes in Baghdad. The reporter just pulled them out of line to talk with them.

They are glad that the Americans have "saved" them, their officers abandoned them and took all their ID papers. They left their weapons and uniforms and just started walking home.

Hey Jackie: :-)

I'm a little bit like Rumsfeld that way, in sometimes focusing too much on the exact words said vs. what they "meant" to say. So yes, I do probably harp on the reading comprehension thing to the annoyance of everyone here. Sorry about that everyone. :-)

It's a pet peeve of mine because my Mom is famous for it.

Me: "Mom, what time would you like to go out to dinner?"

Mom: "I don't really like restaurants with live music."

HUH???? So I'm hyperwankerphobic about it. LOL

Yes, of course I decided to stay here!! I'm fully entrenched in this quagmire. ;-) And I'm Freep-literate now, so I know where to find news on this site. I just never should have jumped in on the discussion that Krodg initiated with his post, because I could "feel his pain" from when I first got here. So I thought I might be able to help explain his side of his point. But it went down the same quagmirish path as before... I'm stubborn, I should have dropped it when it did that. Maybe the third time it comes up for me I'll be able to "stay away from the light!!"

More clear now? No blood no foul -- no harm done here. :-)

PS: I'm putting on my night wankervision goggles now, it's dark here.

I'm watching it now thanks to your heads up!

Bob Arnot (bless him) on MSNBC reported a similar story last week, and then it seems I read yet another story about the Iraqi soldiers being happy and grateful to be in American hands, or in this case, that the Americans won.

So I've known of this phenomenon for about a week. How stunning is that. Of course, we here at FR knew how oppressed and manipulated these people have been, so KUDOS to CNN for airing this and spreading the word.

the purpose, that you keep missing, is a LIVE report of the days events.

Live reports are more than Freepers sexual fantasies.

pardon me, but I think you are having some serious inabilities to correctly read a post. I have had enough of your negativity for this evening and refuse to feed into you any longer.

I am not having trouble reading posts. I am not the only person who has brought this topic up. I have not 'demanded' that people post according to my will...That's nonsense. I merely questioned why the nonsense on this board wasn't moved to chat!!

You're exactly right, my friend. But I tell ya, I wouldn't have found the Breaking News thing on my own. I would have left if a Freeper hadn't pointed it out to me. And yes, I have another window open with news. :-)

But here's another question for y'all: Many of you are able to reply to someone's post IMMEDIATELY after they post it. Is there some sort of 'auto refresh' that you have working, or do you just happen to be reading the "LAST" post in time to reply immediately? I'm always 20-200 posts behind because I do read all the linked stories that people post, etc.

Very glad I stuck around though. It's been fun and very informative. My sister calls me to tell me some war tidbit. I tell her "Yeah, 'WE' knew about that hours ago, and here are the rest of the details about it...." Now she's even got two friends calling her, to get her to call me, to find the full details and update about some headline they heard on TV.

Okay, you are the geologist, you tell me exactly how many barrels of oil that is.

I have no idea. But the deflection response would be "it's however many barrels the US would use in a 6-month period of time."

My turn: Do you have information to refute the 6-month supply issue? If so, please direct me to it... I am happy to be proven wrong.

*** STARTING A FUN TOPIC ***

Let's throw out some ideas for the MONUMENT that we'd love to see erected in the traffic circle. (Realizing it will be the Iraqi people themselves who get to do that sort of thing.)

Before I sign off, just to clarify my "how stunning is that" was referring to the fact that the soldiers fighting in the Iraqi army are relieved to be in American hands, if captured, or happy they we have won and they can go home.

I am pleased CNN showed this.

Rick Levanthal talking about the suspicious truck again on Fox.

Details of Todays Fighting

On the palace grounds they stood around, exhausted from almost two days without sleep but somehow not yet tired enough to sleep. First they had to get to tell their stories about how many RPGs hit their tracks "Four's nothin'; ours took five!' and the guy who got hit in the head by an RPG that was a dud, and the guy who got grazed by a bullet on the behind, this to the post- action amusement of his buddies.

I knew exactly what you meant. Those poor buggers, having to walk for 7 days to get home with no food, water, money or identity papers. I hope we can get them employed soon!

Since there has been no drilling in ANWR, where are you getting your information on the reserve? I am curious, because I see that six month figure quoted all the time, but i can't ever seem to find a source.

My sources are actually not ones that would hold up in court. I haven't been in the field for a few years myself, but I keep in touch with my old workmates, and they are my "source." A couple of them in particular are pretty plugged in on stuff like that, so it's a case of "If Bob and Frank say it's true, then it must be true" for me.

Like I said though, I would be happy to be proven wrong, since I don't have any hard sources that I am citing myself. Like you, I would love to find some hard info on it. But I do know that there are advanced technologies now that enable us to guesstimate subsurface resources w/o having to drill. LandSat technology can do mineral exploration from space, w/o ever walking the ground or taking a sample. And there's always GeoPhysics... don't need to drill for that. Or just simple mapping of the formations, which can provide estimates based on previous knowns. You know the drill (pun intended)... Drill here, strike oil. Drill 10 miles away, strike oil. Formations are consistent in both wells... means there's a darn good chance you'll strike oil if you drill halfway between them, etc.

So, no, I don't have any personal knowledge of the data that was used to conclude there are only 6-months worth of reserves. I am just trusting my Geologist friends who follow these things. :-)

it would supply the country fox six months if all other sources of our oil were ZERO.

True. Another way to look at is: Iraq apparently (supposedly?) supplies 10% of our oil needs. So if we used ANWR instead of Iraqi oil (such as if we hadn't "won" this war... LOLOLOLOL), then that "6-month supply" would last for 5 years. (Did I do that math right? Operating on very little sleep for a week makes an Addict very fuzzy in the brain.)

I'm no nuclear physicist, but if an atomic bomb can produce that much energy... you'd think we could figure out a way to make nuclear cars that could drive for a few hundred miles. ;-)

I'm a Geologist.

I thought you worked in hazardous materials, earlier...

Yes, both true. My degree is in Geology. My career is Environmental Consulting = haz mat emergency response, soil/groundwater investigations cleanups, due diligence site assessments, etc.

But since I'm not a 'boots-on-the-ground' Geologist, I'm not as informed about the latest technologies and such that I should be.

I did a summer internship in Midland, TX for an oil company back in 1984. Didn't learn much, but did win the office Football pool. LOL

I agree with your point: ANWR in the ground is money in the bank; we should keep getting all the cheap ME oil we can, as long as it holds out and stays cheap. I'd hate to see the Leg try to foreclose future development, though.

Well.... that's pretty close to my point. I don't look at it being "Our / United States" oil resources over here under our soil vs. "Their / Middle East" oil resources under their soil. We all know that Oil cannot be regenerated. It took millions of years to produce it. We cannot "grow" new oil. Once it is gone, it is gone. Like an endangered species. At some point, it is ALL going to be gone. Ours, Theirs, His, Hers, all of it. So we might as well start planning for the inevitible now, right? Don't wait until it starts raining to build your shelter, right?

OTOH, it's a FACT that if we don't use it (oil in general), then someone else will, so we might as well get while the gettin' is good. (Kind of like the looters.) Sooo.... it's a complex issue, which is why it's tough for me to have strong feelings one way or the other. I just don't have enough information to take a strong stance yet.

Are you telling me that after you registered you NEVER SAW the front page of this site?

LOL.... Nope. I'm telling you that I never SAW it. You know, looked right through it? I was focused on reading the sign up rules (what am I getting myself into?), privacy policies, etc... and focused on getting through the registration process to post whatever I felt was so dang urgent/important/witty that I couldn't hold out any longer as a lurker... I had to jump in with both feet. But I was focused on getting back to this thread... anything that was slowing me down (such as the Home page) was just an annoyance. LOL
