Americans wouldnt want to be liberated by others
Published Wednesday, April 9, 2003 Dear Editor, the Tribune: Imagine that someone becomes the president of the United States and we find out he or she is a terrible president. However, this person gains so much power that he or she cannot be removed from office.
Now imagine that a country with a strong military, lets say Russia, decides to rid the world of our president. Russia ignores the wishes of the United Nations, U.S. citizens and many other countries and invades the United States. It bombs major government and military installations and in the process accidentally kills hundreds of U.S. citizens. You have no water or electricity. You cannot collect a paycheck because everyone is unable or afraid to go to work. The military takes over major roads and restricts travel. You dont know where your next meal is coming from.
Would you be grateful to the Russians for "liberating" you?
This parallels what the United States is doing in Iraq. The United States is going after Saddam Hussein with an "end justifies the means" attitude. We are invading their country, disrupting lives and killing their citizens to get rid of their leader. Will Iraqis be grateful to the United States for "liberating" them?

Attention!
|
 |
| Our troops give so much of themselves, and we all benefit from their efforts. The next time you look at your bank balance, why not find some way to take some money and put it towards supporting the members of our armed services in some way? Maybe find a family who has someone serving, and buy them dinner, or some groceries, or a gift for their children? Maybe find a way to contribute to a fund for the memory of any of those who have fallen? Our armed forces deserve our support in tangible ways.

It's true. Bad as Clinton was, we didn't want the Ruskies liberating us.

Well, Americans might be grateful if their family members were summarily tortured, raped & gassed by the government, or if their children were imprisoned for refusing to join the ruling party's youth organization. But that's just me.
To: rface
I don't see how you can make the same parallel - when is the last time one of our presidents raped anyone (oops, forgot about Slick Willie).
OK, lets start over - when was the last time one of our presidents tortured and killed people or gouged the eyes out of children to make the parents talk?
We wouldn't want to be liberated because we are the mosted liberated and free nation on Earth. Kuwait was happy to get our help and if you look at the current news, so are the Iraqis now. We are now having our soldiers greeted with flowers.

Apparantly this was written before we got pictures of Iraqi's kissing pictures of Bush. I bet this person would like to take back that letter! Bwahahahahahaha.

This scenario is one of the reasons for the 2nd Amendment. If we do not allow that to be eroded, then we solve the problem ourselves.

Guess this guy has never heard of Baron von Steuben or the Marquis de Lafayette. It helps to have good allies.

we find out he or she is a terrible president. However, this person gains so much power that he or she cannot be removed from office. We had x42, and he was bad enough. But few Americans were severely abused by him, thank God. It was otherwise in Iraq, apparently . . .
To: rface
... the premise is ridiculously flawed. The American people would revolt and would not tolerate a Saddam Hussein. That's why we have the 2nd amendment. But if the tyrant prevailed and terrorized and tortured us, I'm sure we would even welcome the Ruskies at that point. What a stupid analogy.
To: rface
There are so many flaws in this person's "what if" that it would be a waste of time to point them out. The article pretty much speaks for itself: the writer is completely clueless.

I'm grateful for France's help in liberating us from the Brits. (Not that they've been worth a bucket of warm spit since.)
The eastern europeans are grateful for our help in liberating them from the USSR.
We can argue all day long whether this is a "just war" but I think the Iraqi people have decided for us.
If they don't celebrate your arrival, you probably shouldn't be there. If they do, you should.
Anything else is sophistry.

Ever read the Constitution? Unbelievale ignorance. Scary, actually.
