The insults to the human shields is definitely what was meant by those carrying it. They were so happy to be near the soldiers. So the left can try to twist it as they will, but for those of us who actually saw what was going on... it was an insult to the human shields.

I'm positive that's how it is supposed to be read. These guys were in the crowd welcoming the Marines. They were happy to see them. Take it at face value.
