Sky showed footage of the Kurds celebrating in the streets. I noticed that the flag they were waving is slightly different: the three bars, green, white, red and a large yellow sun in the middle, instead of the 3 green stars.
I heard the three stars stood for the Ba'ath Party.
The three-star flag actually predates the Ba'ath regime (it orginally represented Iraq, Egypt, and Syria, which were supposed to form the United Arab Republic). The Ba'athists changed the interpretation.
