Good Morning.
This is the Daily Thread of Operation Iraqi Freedom - Situation Room - LIVE THREAD.
It is designed for general conversation about the events of the day. In depth discussion of events should be left to individual threads - but links to the threads or other articles is highly encouraged. This allows us to stay abreast of the situation in general, while also providing a means of obtaining specific information.
Please have mercy on us dial up limited FReepers! Limit the big graphics, post links instead. A brief description of what the graphic is would help! If you post graphics, please "size" them so that our browsers continue to load the rest of the thread!

To all who helped this get started and keep it running, thank you!
Special thanks to Null and Void for keeping these threads running on the weekends, Mo1 for the screamer, the AdminMods for their tolerance, mhking for the video links, Ragtime Cowgirl for her Exclusive Live Transcription Service, Fledermaus for his 15 minutes of fame, and, of course, Belly Girl...
Yep...did he NAIL it, or what! What insight!!
P.S.: I'm about 50 posts behind... tried to trim my fingernail with a hammer earlier. ;-)
A HUGE BARF ALERT should have appeared in the header and no one should take the drivel as gospel. Yes, it DOES contain a few grains of truth in it, but not enough to make anyone take it as factual.
Those are the two possibilities, yep.
Two further points of information: I've heard from a number of different people who were watching/listening to a BagCam feed at the time that they heard nearby small arms fire before the tank fired. Further, the Iraqi Ministry of Information could be exerting a strong influence on the remaining journalists in the hotel -- who have all been heavily exposed to Baghdad Bob's reality distortion field anyway.
Given that, I'm more inclined to believe the tankers.
A distinction should be made between those journalists who chose to 'embed' with the military under Pentagon authority, and those who are 'wild cards' hanging out at the hotel. While I don't think they should be targets, Vince Brooks and Torie Clarke made an excellent point: they were TOLD that Baghdad was not safe.
I agree with all your points. I took 15 hours of journalism, put in a lot of time with a pad in my back pocket (print only), and then spent years dealing with them as an elected official. My daughter is a MassComm major.
I agree with Shep's point, too; I don't agree with his making it in that manner, after they've kept this story on the front page so long. Air's limited; other stories have suffered.
Any nation observing our military behavior throughout the Clinton era would be mislead into believing we really are that inept. Throw a little chaos at us, and we'll fold up like a cheap ladder.
Our greatest advantage is that we learn from our mistakes, unlike dictatorships that have no choice but to follow the Party's battle plan.
Communists and democrats approach war the same way -- plans carved in stone, and a propoganda campaign to deny mistakes were made.
I find it believable that Putin would underestimate us so badly. He's an old-line communist, and believes the Soviet Union still has a chance at world domination.
If he is involved on the wrong side, boy, did he screw up.
