"Wish You Were Here"

For all the free people that still protest.
You're welcome. We protect you and you are protected by the best.
Your voice is strong and loud,
but who will fight for you? No one standing in your crowd.
We are your fathers, brothers, and sons,
wearing the boots and carrying guns.
We are the ones that leave all we own,
to make sure your future is carved in stone.
We are the ones who fight and die,
We might not be able to save the world, Well, at least we try.
We walked the paths to where we are at
and we want no choice other than that.
so when you rally your group to complain,
take a look in the back of your brain.
In order for that flag you love to fly
wars must be fought and young men must die.
We came here to fight for the ones we hold dear.
If that's not respected, we would rather stay here.
So please stop yelling, put down your signs,
and pray for those behind enemy lines.
When the conflict is over and all is well,
be thankful that we chose to go through hell.

Corporal Joshua Miles and all the boys from 3rd Battalion 2nd Marines,
Kuwait 3/9/2003

Good Morning.

This is the Daily Thread of Operation Iraqi Freedom - Situation Room - LIVE THREAD.

It is designed for general conversation about the events of the day. In depth discussion of events should be left to individual threads - but links to the threads or other articles is highly encouraged. This allows us to stay abreast of the situation in general, while also providing a means of obtaining specific information.

Please have mercy on us dial up limited FReepers! Limit the big graphics, post links instead. A brief description of what the graphic is would help!  If you post graphics, please "size" them so that our browsers continue to load the rest of the thread!

To all who helped this get started and keep it running, thank you!

Special thanks to Null and Void for keeping these threads running on the weekends, Mo1 for the screamer, the AdminMods for their tolerance, mhking for the video links, Ragtime Cowgirl for her Exclusive Live Transcription Service™, Fledermaus for his 15 minutes of fame, and, of course, Belly Girl...

Amusing tangent about the guy who's with that embed reporter...he's leading a sniper team (to the best of my knowledge, information is hazy), which should come as no surprise, because at a cookout when we were like...oh, seven or eight years old...he hucked an oversized tinker-toy at me while I wasn't looking, and, from a distance of about fifty yards, hit me smack dab in the middle of my forehead, causing blood to gush in great amounts and my mother to almost pass out. I still have the scar. ;-)

Now THAT'S a born sniper!

Anyone second my motion to rename the Baghdad quarter "Freedom City?" I think it has a poetic and welcome ring to it.

Whoah... I think I just say a guy in arab clothes lift his long "nightshirt" and give that Saddam Hussein poster the old man is holdiing an up close and personal "private" insult...

I do believe that is FAR worse than just slapping it with a shoe...!

Another one spit on that Saddam Hussein poster.

I'm beginning to think that today is going to be like the updated version of Star Wars Episode 6 at the very end when the people celebrate and sing because the Emperor is dead and the Empire is no more.

Someway somehow the LATimes, NYtimes and some of the other left leaning news outlets will report this in the most negative way.

I'm thinking that the word on the street over there is that Saddam bought the farm in that last bombing. The widespread looting and cheering has to have been caused by something...

Dunno, but it certainly looks like a good day for the "Hearts and Minds" campaign (to use a phrase that has been so beaten to death I'm hitting myself for even using it)!

Fox had a banner a minute ago saying US headquarters now at the baghdad airport. I wonder if Franks is up that way still.

Fox - A Marine convoy halted, due to a blue flatbed partially concealed. They opened up, causing it to explode. They then just found some SA-2's ready to fire. After that, the crowed resumed their celebration.

I can see the headline now, "Regime change leaves police vaccum; U.S. Troops overwhelmed as Iraqis loot Baghdad."

OK, every hand wringing reporter in the entire world, please say in unison "But why aren't the Iraqis welcoming the Americans as liberators?" - oooooooooooooooooooooooooooOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHH! I wish I could go back in time one week and beat a few of them to death... grrrr..

There is NO way that Reuter's correspondents were firing at that tank! If the technology is that good, then it'd have to have been the Reuter's guys were shooting at the tank. Since they WERE'NT shooting at the tank, the technology can't be that perfect!

"United States Troops promote lawless looting of UN offices." Sure. Easy. Person-un-person at the Ministry of Information...er...New York Times, sorry. :-)

Or maybe they'll just give up and go with Baghdad Bob, and insist that it's actually all being filmed on a soundstage somewhere in California.

Wonder what bubba's thinking right about now. I keep thinking about his first run for the presidency and how the theme was 'It's the Economy - Stupid'. He accused the former President Bush of caring about foreign policy more than domestic - he had to since foreign policy was (and is) his weak spot.
