Had Mrs. Henegar for Algebra I in the 9th grade, and my sister hated me for that!
Carolyn (5 years older) was truly bright, but strove to be popular, shall we say? Played a lot and made B's in the same class under Mrs. Henegar, and told out parents it was her teaching.
Smart Aleck comes along and for the year under same lady had a 98 average...hahahaha
I actually taught the Algebra II class under the Assistant Coach - he'd take roll call, collect our homework, point to the new assignment on the board and say, "If you have any questions, ask Margaret."
There were only eight other students, and he'd leave to do coaching things, and I just kept one lesson ahead of everyone. It worked fne, all of us longtime friends!
Mrs. Henegar became the Principal before I graduated, and gave me a glowing character reference when I was applying for the Marine Corps - how I went straight from Boot Camp to the podium as a Classroom Instructor for women recruits at Parris Island, plus what my pastor wrote.
Then there was Coach Rick Gillespie who became the Principal - was of the new MelHi location when my boys were in 11th and 12th grades after we moved back. Had a grand talk with him then.
One of my friends had been the babysitter for his little children.
Both Principals are now deceased, and I have many fond memories of them.
The Eastern building was the Senior and Junior High - middle one grades 1-6.
Heck - a little house two blocks east of the school and across the street was where during WWII we went to get our ration stamp books for essential goods!
No longer there, of course.
My daughter (who teaches school here in Brevard) and I recently attended a play at the Henegar (Guys & Dolls)...
They've restored it beautifully.
Old downtown New Haven is one of my favorite haunts :)
Lovely old antique stores, shops, and small, quaint restaurants.
