If the Road Map is allowed to succeed without significant reform in the PA, then that Palestinian state becomes 1) Judenrein 2) a Terror Oganization 3)committed to the Phased Plan, which is the next step (according to the Palestinians) of their destruction of Israel.
Those in Israel who oppose a state (Netanyahu is one) understand the long-term goals of the PA.
There are Palestinians in the West Bank who just want peace. Who think Israel is a good friend. They do not have a voice and no power. Arafat's control is too great.
Reform can happen if those Palestinians who will work for peace can be elevated into power. Do that, and a Palestinian state could work. But, the roadmap doesn't address it.
Lip service is given to the terror mostly because the West sees the terror as a sympton of hopelessness and not the work of hopefulness. Terror continues because terror works. Terror has consistently caused the West to deliver Israel and coerce Israel into positions that are untenable.
I do believe the President when he says that terror must stop... and reforms must be implemented. But Europe, Russia, the UN, and our own State Department are putting out a different signal altogether. A state in 5 years... no matter what.
If Israel is prepared to make a pledge that they will never request or accept another dime of U.S. taxpayer money, then I am prepared to let Israel do to them what Israel wants done with them.
U.S. taxpayers have given Israel over $100 billion dollars over the years. It is time to embrace our Road Map or strike out on their own.
However, I must admit, the recent discussions of "Arab population control" measures in the Israeli Knesset do worry me a bit.
