During the time of the Roman Rebublic, their mortal enemy across the Med. was the empire of Carthage, near the present day city of Tunis. These Punic wars, around 250 BC IIRC were a life and death struggle for control of the region. And despite the best efforts of the brilliant general Hannibal (the guy who crossed the Alps with elephants) the Romans won and Carthage was sacked. One of the reasons for their downfall was the change in climate of North Aftica. Whereas before it was wet enough to support crops (and pay taxes) it began to whither away as the climate changed, becoming more arid. Climate change is an ongoing feature of this world.
