Well, the $8,800 per month was our cost under the old UUNet contract. That was the going rate then. We got quotes from several tier one providers and thought they were probably the best we could find at the time. There were cheaper sources among the lower rated providers, but they may not have been as reliable.
Then the bottom fell out of the market. The big bandwidth providers had ramped up for the Internet boom, but the boom busted and the demand fell off. We shopped around the next year and found another tier one provider who offered us a much better contract rate. And now this year, we were able to negotiate an even better rate with the same company.
No, our traffic has not fallen off. It's probably doubled or more during the same period. And the management of this little site (that would be me with Amy's help) works double shifts seven days per week 365 days per year. Have no idea what I actually do (have never documented it) or why it takes so long to do it. Guess that's just what it takes to operate the largest, fastest, higest quality, best read, ie, "the premier" conservative website on the planet! Ask any true FReeper. They'll tell you.
