"Wonderful story," not "beautiful story" (which is what is usually posted).
And he was speaking--to whom?--to the perpetrator. He was saying "Hey, we all have issues, you know, it's not a big deal..."
Ask anyone who is expert at hostage situations. One of the primary things you try to do is reassure the perpetrator that they are not alone, that they aren't "weird" or "strange." You try to keep them feeling further isolated.
That's what I think Smart was doing. You can interpret it how you will, but the LIE is that he was saying her being abducted was a "beautiful story."
What he in fact said is that the prayers of all the "whole world" made for a "wonderful story."
Interesting also, that their inkling that things would turn out all right, proved to be true. Again, you can make something evil of that if you wish, but most reasonable people will not.

I am but awed by your stamina.
To explain and defend the dumb-show that's been played out for public consumption is a daunting task.
But you never seem to tire.
I think your diet has something to do with it. I'll give you that much.

Semantics? Puleeze....I don't think anyone meant to lie when they misquoted his words. I mean he said them back in June, 2002.
"you can make something evil of that if you wish, but most reasonable people will not."
Why did you feel the need to attack me with word's like "evil" when all I did was respond to your request to see the source of Tom's statement?
Illbay, your slip is showing and it's not attractive.
