A growing majority of Americans believe the war in Iraq is justified even if the United States does not find weapons of mass destruction. At the same time, public optimism about the progress of the fighting has surged as recent gains on the battlefield have eased fears that the allies will become bogged down in a long and costly war, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll.
The survey found that more than nine out of 10 Americans believe the war is going well. Nearly half -- 47 percent -- said the conflict is going "very well," up 13 percentage points in a week.
But that upbeat assessment could just as quickly become more guarded, the survey suggested. Eight in 10 Americans see a hard and bloody battle immediately ahead as U.S. troops mass outside Baghdad for what may be the showdown with forces loyal to Iraqi President Saddam Hussein.
"I think they'll probably get into chemical warfare," said Marlene Montgomery, 56, a homemaker who lives in Portsmouth, Ohio. "And I think they'll get into a battle, heavy. But I think they're prepared."
More than two-thirds of those interviewed -- 69 percent -- said that going to war with Iraq was the right thing to do even if the United States fails to turn up biological or chemical weapons, up from 53 percent in a survey taken the day after the war started

Another recent poll showed blacks and liberals mostly against the war.
Not all liberals are whacko activists, but most whackos are liberal.

Even if we didn't, 50,000 celebrating Iraquis and horror stories about gassing, torture, et. al from the Iraquis themselves would trump it anyway. We're doing God's work, and people know it.

What's the deal wailing about not finding any I'm sure that WMDs will be found. But it is gratifying to know that so many see Saddam's evil with or without WMDs.

They'll simply shift to something else. Yes, I know, people supposedly aren't stupid and should see right through it, but there are zombies in every country. I almost wonder if there's a huge whiteboard at tne NYT that's *filled* with things they can poke at to make Bush look bad. Someone's erasing this line and they're having a skull session on what to pick next and how to "shade" it. They'll run some stories, and that'll send the orders out to ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, (and *all* the other papers) to spew it out.
Remember "gravitas"?

Wackos are usually non-productive people with no marketable skills, and therefore have little means. Communist ideology naturally appeals to these people ("we'll take from those evil capitalist pigs and give to YOU").

Also, this:
Mustard gas and cyanide have been found in the Euphrates River . . . further evidence that Saddam Hussein has produced weapons of mass destruction.

Here comes the leftist spin! Where are the WMD'S? You haven't found any yet. Why not? Yada yada yada.....You got that right. I was listening to Batchelor and Alexander on WABC and caught the tail end of an interview with Katrina vanden Heuvel (editor of the Nation) and she was commenting on the fact that because we didn't find WMD, that we must allow the reconstruction of Iraq to happen via the auspices of the U.N.
Guess since they weren't able to stop the war, they want their leftist friends in the U.N. to win the peace.

" I wonder why wackoism gravitates toward liberalism?"
Because liberalism is in itself a wacko concept. It never works because realism and the fact that people don't always 'play nice' comes into the picture to FU the whole concept.
This reality keeps liberals in a constant state of mental and probably physical constipation.
Remember Patsy Schroeder from Colorado? Just picture ANY liberal and you will see what I mean.
