This writer makes some real good points about cultural differences between Anglo countries (the US, the UK, etc) and others. Words have more literal meanings for us. For other cultures, words have less literal meanings and are chiefly a vehicle for self-aggrandizement.

That may be one of the reasons by the Anglo cultures are among the most free and prosperous places the world has ever seen. It's one of the reasons we should be wary of people in our own culture who use words in vague or slippery ways to pump themselves up.

Probably that's because this writer is a historian, not an average reporter.
