Human shield quandary
3. april 2003
Justice Minister Lene Espersen has been asked to investigate whether 57-year-old Dane Helene Dreyer, who recently departed for Baghdad to act as a human shield against allied bombardments, has violated the Danish criminal code paragraph by aiding and abetting the enemy in a time of war.
The chairman of the right-wing Danish People's Party youth organisation, Kenneth Kristensen, together with party deputy chairman Peter Skaarup, believes the question is worth asking.
Kristensen said that individuals who serve as human shields for Saddam Hussein's regime are encompassed under paragraph 102 of the Danish criminal code. The paragraph recommends penalties of up to 16 years in prison for "individuals who, in a time of war or occupation, by aiding or abetting the enemy, or by promoting enemy interests, weaken the battle readiness of the Danish state or its allies."
"Just because a war is being waged far from Denmark doesn't mean that Danes are exempt from the same laws that apply when Denmark is at war," said Kenneth Kristensen.
Peter Skaarup said the question is legitimate.
"It is problematic for a Dane to act as a human shield, and play into Saddam Hussein's heinous strategy of using civilians to fight against the allies. She (Dreyer) should get out of there as soon as possible," said Peter Skaarup.
57 years old and she still doesn't know a dictator when she sees one.
During a recent interview, when asked what a dictator was, she said "It's what you get when you cross a 'tator and a male sex organ".
