Posted on 04/05/2003 5:56:54 AM PST by rhombus
Fox just reported that AWACS planes took off from the Constellation. Methinks they are confusing their planes.

No, the Navy does have a small AWACs-type plane, but it's been a few years, so forgive me if I can't give you the exact name and #.

I think they may have a smaller version, but I dunno if they call it AWACS.

No- an E2 Hawkeye is an AWACS

How about an E2C Hawkeye AWACS?

That's an E-2 "Hawkeye", I believe.

What would they do with the AWACS plane? What are they picking up on? (AWACS is an intelligence gathering plane, right?)

I just saw what looked like an AWAC plane taking off from an aircraft carrier a few minutes ago.
Are AWACs the only planes that have that circular thing on top? Or are there others?

I know...
To: rhombus
an awacs would be pretty difficult to park on a carrier
To: demlosers
Generally speaking AWACS is the E-3 but yes the Navy uses the E2C Hawkeye -- don't think they call it AWACS though

When a newbie would come on the ship, we would point out an E2 taking off (with the big dish on top) and wait for a C2 to land (COD)telling them that the plne hd let the dish spinning around in the air. When the COD would take off, we would tell them tha it was going to pick up the dish, and sure enough, here would come the E2 with the dish on top! Ony had one person fall for it, and boy did we have fun with him!

AWACS = Airborne Warning and Control System
It's an air traffic controller in the sky.

The radar system on the plane can track any airborne target within 150+ miles and can provide target information to Allied aircraft..
