Bollinger many decades ago, when he was a first year assistant professor, taught my class in contracts. We had many good debates. He was a reasonable guy, although a bit caustic. Still, he gave me a top grade, in part because I was mouthy in his class. I respect that. In those days, I was more of a hard core right winger. In this case, Bollinger's response is correct. You don't bounce someone for stating the execrable in a university context. But the guy should be denied advancement absent compelling contervailing circumstances (ie he is a freakin genius in his field), and if he is denied advancement, he will soon depart. That is certainly what would happen to some junior pup stating outrageous and unuanced and close to demonstrably false hard right wing opinions.

Torie, as much as it pains me to do so (from the content of what the assistant professor said), I agree with you that he should not be summarily dismissed from Columbia. I like Bill O'Reilly's suggestion that he should instead be shunned, scorned and even ridiculed by students, faculty and administration for his immoral, inciteful and hateful remarks. This, along with his not being considered for advancement, will effectively punish him for his misdemeanor.

Bull$hit! His remarks are a clear and present example of something known as "treason". You cannot make claims such as his during a time of war. And don't anybody waste my time coming back with "we haven't declared war". We've had our men and women dieing in combat, and that means we're at war. I want these b@st@ards locked up......if I can't have the found guilty on the spot and executed for their crimes against America.

We had losers like this in America back during the days of the Nazis. Why don't you find out what we did to the b@st@rds we caught and prosecuted. I can guarantee you they didn't get to keep their job, for fear of NOT advancing.

Has America completely lost its backbone and will to survive?

Yep-- folks scream and yell about free speech, and that's all well and good. There comes a point, however, where it becomes desirable to stuff a sock down certain individual's mouths-- like in those commercials where little Susy pipes up in a crowded elevator...

Ol' whatshisname is obviously all about the publicity. Still living out his adolescence. Most of us grow up at some point and stop saying sh!t that's clearly intended to elicit some reaction... Unless we've had too much Night Train... Not that I would be speaking from experience or anything...
