NEWS - Former Cat Stevens And Paul McCartney On Benefit CD For Iraqi Children
04/02/2003
(4/2/03, 4 p.m. ET) -- The former Cat Stevens and Paul McCartney are among the artists who appear on an upcoming benefit album for children in Iraq. The collection, called Hope, will be released in Britain on April 21. No U.S. release date has been announced.
Cat Stevens became a Muslim some 25 years ago, changed his name to Yusuf Islam, and has been a leading figure in the British Muslim community for a number of years. His re-recording of his 1971 hit as Cat Stevens, "Peace Train," was announced last month. It's his first recording in English in 25 years. Paul McCartney donated a version of his song "Calico Skies" to the project.
Other artists on the tribute include English pop star George Michael, who contributed a cover of the anti-war song "The Grave," originally by "American Pie" hitmaker Don McLean, David Bowie, New Order, Avril Lavigne, Irish pop star Ronan Keating, and singer Lee Ryan of the U.K. pop group Blue also make appearances.
A similar benefit collection called Peace Songs will be released on April 15 in Canada and also feature McCartney, Bowie, and the former Cat Stevens; plus Canadian artists including Celine Dion. Proceeds from that album, issued by both Sony Music Canada and BMG Canada, will benefit War Child Canada, which is dedicated to providing humanitarian support to war-affected children around the world.
