Or else return to the pre '56 flag that Confederate Veterans seemed perfectly happy to live under for their whole lives. Just one opinion, and it's not my flag
An interesting statement. Your opinion and yet you know that Confederate Veterans were perfectly happy to live under what flag? You don't much about Confederate Veterans, and you are right - it's isn't your flag - nor was the one "pre '56". The fact is that the proposed flag is a variation of that flag, which was itself a variation of the Stars and Bars (aka the "First National" flag of the C.S.A.).
Deo Vindice!

Isn't Chesty the name of the big log that Marines have to pick up in basic training?

it's one that I could accept but only after we vote on it. It kinda makes you wonder why some folks are so adamantly opposed to a referendum doesn't it? Just maybe it's because they're afraid the old flag will be flying over the gold dome again if the people of GA are ever allowed to have a say about it. What's so un-American about letting the majority decide anyway? I always thought that WAS the American way, and I still think it is. I understand about representative government and all that, but we elect people who will represent our point of view, not dictate to us what our POV should be.
Like I said before on another thread, it's not so much the flag with me, it's the principle of the thing. The majority is having something it doesn't want rammed down it's throat by the minority, and that's not the way it's supposed to work in this nation. I thought the voters of GA made that clear when we gave King Roy the boot last year, but it seems we're gonna have to say it again next election.

What did the pre-1956 flag look like, anyway?
For that matter, what did the pre-1860 Georgia state flag look like?

Newly proposed flag - based upon Stars and Bars (1st National C.S.A) and
1st War of Independence. Also includes the Seal of Georgia - from the pre-Civil War flag.
Post Reconstruction Flag - based upon Stars and Bars and 1st War of Independence. Also includes the Seal of Georgia - from the pre-Civil War flag.
Hmm. Looks
somehow related. Considering that the post-recostruction flag bore the seal of Georgia, which adorned the brass buttons and other emblem of the Georgia regiments of the Confederacy's; and the resemblence to the First National flag of the Confederacy, one would think the Confederate veterans were VERY please with this flag after reconstruction.
So, as I stated, the newly proposed flag would be a fitting tribute to those brave men.
BTW, I would imagine
hostile words would more likely be the profane ones - yours. The motto on the flag ("In God We Trust") is not hostile. Your comment about the name was not meant to be intellectually stimulating, informative, or even funny. Just profane. Sad commentary.

Confederate Veterans were happy with the pre '56 flag, so why not return to it in the name of heritage rather than make up a new flag that is just slightly different.
You questioned my knowledge of the South and Confederate Veterans. My family has been in the South since 1710, and I doubt you know more about it than I do, unless it is your profession.

"In God We Trust" is another attempt to perpetuate that tired old idea that by wearing our religion on our sleeves we make the world a better place. It is undignified to use religion for sloganeering. It is a private matter.
"Kiss My Ass" on the other hand is the almost universal attitude of Southerners in dealing with the rest of the World (Yankees). It is an apropriate statement for a flag, in the same vein as "Don't Tread on Me"

Leftists claim they're interested in "democracy".
They aren't. Never were.
They're interested in liberalism in the short term, and leftism in the long-term. They're perfectly happy with denying democracy when the people in such democracy would oppose their core values. It's leftism uber alles for them.

I am glad to hear that. I am a 9th generation Southerner, the first arriving in Virginia in 1670. My Georgian ancestors go back to verteran land grants following the 1st War of Independence - one was a Regulator and the another a member of the 3rd South Carolina against Cromwell.
Considering the usages in the past to the phrase, "In God We Trust" I would not consider it sloganeering.
But thanks for the explanation.

As of Right Now, 1:44 AM EST April 7, 2003 the flag of Georgia State University is flying over the new Presidential Palace in Baghdad. Maybe you should adopt it as your new State Flag?

hmmm not familiar with that. Must be something new since my days in boot camp. Worst thing I remember was Mount Mother F*c***, and a little known sandpit called Happy Valley.

It's not too shabby...sort of like Mississippi's Bonnie Blue Magnolia flag...but hey....my homestate kept their's....thanks to the unabashedly southern 40% of blacks who voted to keep it. They voted better than most white suburban liberals...lol...imagine that

Tis flag wont work it has "In God we trust" on it. Im sure the ACLU is fixing to go after them That's what makes it perfect. Replaces the stars and bars while still sticking it in the eye of the liberals.

I'm sure you probably know this, but just in case, that's the flag for The University of Georgia, not Georgia State University.
To: Kozak
That is one great looking flag even if one knew nothing about it's history from any perspective...strictly asthetic perception.
