The Long Reach of Saddam
Newsweek web via MSNBC.com ^ | 4-3-03 | Rod Nordland

Welcome to the Republic of Umm Qasr. Water comes out the end of a jerry-rigged pipeline from Kuwait. Security is provided by the British Royal Marines. There's a deep-water port, one of the finest in the Middle East, but only one ship has called so far--and no others seem on the horizon.

ELECTRICITY IS NONEXISTENT. The nights are dark and dangerous. The town's 40,000 residents are scared and angry. And this is what free Iraq consists of so far, after two weeks of war.

In many practical ways, life is worse in Umm Qasr than it was under Saddam’s regime.

This is just the beginning of journalistic fair and balanced reporting in a post-war Iraq.

The only comment- two weeks of war- says it all. Even if everything in the article was true, what do they expect in two weeks?

It doesn't make a whit of difference to them. Even if a new Iraqi government, headed by Iraqis, had been installed, Saddam & company dead, oil pumping round the clock providing $$$ to rebuild Iraq, WMD discovered, journalists will continue their defeatist & negative reporting.

I have a feeling this is just the beginning.

The public is smarter than liberals give them credit for.

You are right! This is what President Bush and Admin have to counter in the next few weeks. That is why getting Baghdad bagged ("Getting rid of all the Saddam agents, and the climate of fear in Umm Qasr, may prove a lot harder.")
is paramount.

The next, is to get started quickly on war crimes tribunals and crimes against humanity to rout the hardline party leaders out. There will be no quarter. They will come to justice.

You may be right. However, we've seen opinion shift overnight once the media comes up with a sound bite that is repeated over & over until it becomes truth to many. Much of the public thinks only in sound bites.

Exactly! No pause, no hesitation, no apologies. Give them no time to regroup.

This & several others just like it are the vanguard of Phase II.

There're those who'd say we should try being more reserved, more *civilized* whenever dealing with the Liberal-Socialist's Lamestream.

...uh-huh.

Too many coalition lives have been lost to turn this into a PC reconstruction.

For most jouralists, Iraq will not be "better" for the average Iraqi until they are back under the heel of another dictatorship or preferably, a communist police state. Barring that, a socialist parlimentary system will do in a pinch.

Just don't give the Iraqis actual 100% true unfettered freedom. From a journalistic perspective, its worse than feeding those creatures from Gremlins after midnight and getting them wet.

Think so?
If you've not already read this, here, C&P away...

This is an insideous bunch we're dealing with here in charge of the printing presses.
They're every bit the enemy a Saddam could ever be & that's just *one* more example.

It'll be portrayed "their way" or it ain't gonna be portrayed, a'tall.

Now lemme tell ya, that kinda bold, shameless, manical type of behavior's the biggest threat to me & my freedom(s) I've ever faced.

...in my entire life.

Good grief! Is he watching the same war?

Was it the former Shah of Iran who tagged the media as the fourth estate and warned they would be our worst enemy and attempt our downfall? This goes waaaay back...when he was deposed.

"Good grief! Is he watching the same war?"

Well??
He's watching "the war" his , isn't he? "Was it the former Shah of Iran who tagged the media as the fourth estate and warned they would be our worst enemy and attempt our downfall?"

Yup, sure was.
Recall what happened to this guy too, eh.
As I sit here thinking, the Shah & Newt Gingrich met "similar" fates for their audacity speaking out against these insideous hell-bent forces, too.

"This goes waaaay back...when he was deposed."

I remember it all too well; among the darkest 444 days I certainly ever had to endure.
Also recall (vividly) Carter's being shamed outa the WH partially due to (among many other things) his total bungling & incompetence in the handling of that matter, too.

Amazingly enough (& now that you've mentioned the 4thE?)
We all recently witnessed our fourth estate attempting to perform -- yet another -- *miracle*.
Yup.

...ressurecting Carter's image from the dead.

I'll never forget the Shah's words. I was fairly young at that time and apolitical. BUT his statement was the beginning of my awakening. It's like those words are burned in my brain...almost prophetic....
