After tough days of hiding behind children, firing on masses of civilians, and forcing conscripts into service at gunpoint, they decide they want to surrender and are scared?
Tough Sh*t.

Don't give up just yet. The Times is working hard to restore morale among Saddam's devotees.

The problem, he said, is that the widely hated party needs protection from mob violence if its members decide to give up. This is precisely why the leaders of this party would not announce Saddam's death. They are more afraid of what their own people would do with them if they knew Saddam was dead than of what the U.S. military would do to them.

They are afraid of the people - Wow! They should be afraid of the people - after the way they have treated them, they deserve everything they get. Out of our decency, we might give them escort away from the area to be arrested - but they surely don't deserve it.
I think the main reason we would do it is because we couldn't just stand by and allow the wholesale murder of the bums - no matter how much we might understand the anger of the people.

"So far as the reports of threats to the Iraqi Public,
here we have one of Saddam's Special Republican Guards
broadcasting to Iraqi men that if they do not go to
the front and die fighting the Americans Infidels,
she will personaly come to their house and screw them to death."

"They are afraid, but they think once Baghdad falls they can surrender," said the cleric, ...The problem, he said, is that the widely hated party needs protection from mob violence if its members decide to give up. Too bad, so sad. You reap what you sow. If we wait to enter the city after the party there will be thousands less POW's to process. But, we will have to harvest them from lampposts. Hmmm, decisions, decisions. Lets have a late breakfast and talk this one over at length...

"Hey, Jim Boy? Do you know how Saddam likes his leg of lamb?"
"No, Bones, how does Saddam like his leg of lamb?"
"One each around his ears!"
Bada Bang! Bada Bing!
But the show must go on!
"Hey, Jim Boy? Did you know Saddam was a Frat boy in college?"
"No, Bones, I didn't."
"Yeah, he pledged Faruk A Yew!"
Bada Bang! Bada Bing!

I think that, concerning the topic of this thread, we need to stick to the Prime Directive...

I'm amazed by the speed of this war's terrible swift sword; but, the biggest surprise as been how long it's taken for this town to topple. I thought they would be done with them a week ago.

I believe that this is an Iraqi civil issue. We should turn them over to the new Iraqi regional authorities. Yes, but they'll have to surrender or be captured first.
