No one was willing to admit that head shots can and do happen in combat.

Yes they do. Now, of the 40 some known American combat KIA, how many of those do you guess were head shots? Yet at least two of the four paraded in that film were. Just play the odds and you come to the unavoidable conclusion, well, you know what that conclusion is. You are welcome, however, to wait for some "official" confirmation if you wish.

If they were executed, there will probably be signs of a contact gunshot wound - easily identifiable by the forensics guys.

I remember reading in one report that these were contact wounds to the head - not a common occurrence in combat. And as MileHi says, one might be a coincidence, but fifty percent looks bad.

I wouldn't bother to torture those responsible. They clearly have no morals and no conscience, and hence probably no souls. So causing them to suffer simply damages those who do the torturing. Just destroy them as you would a rabid dog or a rat. I would publicize it, though, 'pour l'encourager les autres'.
