Ga Rob - The difference with the Dead is that they didn't get political on thye stage. Some of the members may have had political views, and done some activism in their private lives, but they never made their shows into a political commentary - even during the Vietnam war.
Jerry Garcia was a-political, and always spoke as such. He didn't want anyone attributing political views to him - although many tried. So he certainly didn't let his stage get mired in political nonsense.
Ironically, the Dead with their fanbase had much more of a free-ride to espouse leftist political ideology from the stage...But they always chose not to.

Exactly my friend. My last Dead show was 1978. The end of their apex in my view. Also the last time I indulged in Owlsley coincidentally..
Now, 25 years and 4 children later I can look back and not be too offended by the tribal Dead thing. Listening to Jefferson Airplane do Volunteers or CSNY do "Almost cut my hair" would now be insufferable given the sensibilities I acquired from about age 22 onwards...lol
