THE 54th Engineers were keyed up and prepared for an ambush yesterday as they headed into the Karbala Gap - the last stepping stone to Baghdad.

They had been warned that elements of the Iraqi military and paramilitary thugs would very likely try to thwart their advance.

The Karbala Ambush: Another terrifying battle that never happened. Sorry to disappoint the naysayers, but the "quagmire" just refuses to materialize.

I didn't realize that modern kids still knew the songs of the sixties...or are these songs the only ones that the writer recognized?...

Or maybe the writer was making it up...

I'm amazed that a 23 and 25 year old would have even heard of Simon and Garfunkel. Parent's influence, no doubt.

There was a funny moment this morning on "Fox and Friends" while Brian, Steve, and E.D. were discussing this story with reporter Rick Leventhal, who is embedded with the Marines in Iraq. Rick was absolutely incredulous that the Army was singing a Simon and Garfunkel song, and snorted that no MARINE would be caught dead singing one of 'em. Furthermore, he insisted they probably didn't even know a S&G song as they looked all looked pretty blank when questioned. Still disbelieving, he then proceeded to ask one Marine what song HE'D sing on the way to Baghdad.

In perfect deadpan, the Marine replied, "Kill Them All" by Metallica.
(Leventhal's response: "I knew it! I knew it!")

Yep...our Marines. Go, guys!
