Pfc. Jessica Lynch, rescued Tuesday from an Iraqi hospital, fought fiercely and shot several enemy soldiers after Iraqi forces ambushed the Army's 507th Ordnance Maintenance Company, firing her weapon until she ran out of ammunition, U.S. officials said yesterday.

I would imagine that she felt that she would be raped and tortured if she was taken alive. Fear can make even the meekest of milktoasts into a lion. But it takes something more to hang on in the shape she was in with what I'm sure was p!$$ poor medical treatment and the roughing up that she took after her weapon ran dry. Hats off to one tough trooper. To quote Louis L'Amour, "... she's one to ride the river with!"

I can live with women combatants, as long as they can meet the OLD standards of fitness and strength formerly demanded of every soldier.

Just as I support the right of blacks to learn at all universities, and oppose them getting preferences above their qualifications, I grudgingly support the right of women to pursue the military career, as long as they meet the demands, including all the upper body strength aspects for which many of them are disadvantaged.

Diddle, you are absolutely right...she is a hero...she joined the service to serve her country and earn her future with money for a degree. That makes her a true american hero in my book. I joined the service because my father and my older brother had done the same. Absolutely no sarcasm...
