Pfc. Jessica Lynch, rescued Tuesday from an Iraqi hospital, fought fiercely and shot several enemy soldiers after Iraqi forces ambushed the Army's 507th Ordnance Maintenance Company, firing her weapon until she ran out of ammunition, U.S. officials said yesterday.

Due to the physical demands and the unit cohesiveness needed in a combat team it's a profoundly bad idea to put women in the front line.

That being said, its a rule of thumb in counter-terrorism that a trained and well armed female is more dangerous than a man. I've read in more than one place that in taking down a terror group special ops forces are told to "shoot the women first". They are quicker to react and have less tendency to think about the threat before firing. Moammar Qadafi may be nuts, but his personal body guard is made up of Libyan amazons.

As per the really excellent picture of the Statue of Liberty holding a baby, the most dangerous place in the world is between a mother and her child. In PFC Lynch's case, it appears she took real offense and definite action against the Iraqis ambushing her buddies. Of course, the fact that she's from Scot-Irish-Celt ancestry probably didn't hurt.

Everybody ought to be extremely proud of her and the question over whether she should have been in that position in the first place is quite separate from the praise she deserves for how she performed.

Had she been held to the same standards that the men were, she likely would not have been in the military at all.

you'd be pissing and whining about what an awful thing it was for her to be there

Was this "story" (and story is what it is) supposed to make me a convert and sign off on women in combat???

Yep, but I bet she was raped though unfortunately. And a lot. Thats probably the only reason she wasn't killed. I wouldn't be surprised if she's pregnant.

Yes, but isn't it odd that West Point has not moved to repeal the NCAA rules regarding "mens sports", since they have so many females that are just as good as males. Then again, the reason may be the same for eliminating break area procedures at airborne school, slowing down the runs at basic training, physically lowering the obstacles on the "confidence" course, insisting on quota's for assignments into aviation and engineer branches, dual physical standards, the elimination of rifle runs at all of the academies, etc. etc. etc.

I don't care whether you sign off on women in combat or not. It doesn't matter. She was there. She acted heroically. Her story will be told and retold, even while forgotten putzes natter on about whether or not women should be in combat.

When during wartime a story of American heroism, accomplishment, or victory comes across reputable newswires, the first words of a patriot should not be along the lines of "I'll bet this is a bunch of PC crap." If I have to explain "why," then there's no need for me to bother.

That's my thought too. They aren't discussing that but if it's the case I'm sure we'll hear about it eventually.

I'm also in Bucks County. I did not heard Christian yesterday, although I've heard some of his former interviews with Smerconish. He's one of my favorite war consultants. Later in the evening on 1210, Jeff Katz interviewed a former military intelligence officer and she verified what you say Christian reported. She said that she believed the Iraqi's would have slowly killd her and that the rescuers saved her life. She also said she was taken so quickly to Germany because of the psychological unit there.

BTW, I didn't know that Christian has ever run for the Congressional seat here. Will he ever run again? I want Greenwood OUT. From what I've heard, Christian sounds like a good man for the job.

There are really a bunch of bitter twisted people posting here. I'm for a new rule--no "heroism denials" when it comes to US soldiers during time of war.

I do not agree/skeptical with post #666-the first duty of a patriot (right wing ones anyway) is to NOT TRUST the govt. and always question authority!

Who was that great man who once said "Trust but verify"?

If she grew up in the country around guns and knew how to hunt, I can see her doing this.

Have you seen her family on TV? They're the quiet, unassuming quiet type--and tough as nails! They're what made this country what it is today, by the grace of God! Her mom said that Jessica would probably return to her unit--she was no quiter. Good, tough people. Jessica walks proudly in their footsteps.

Probability of rape goes up imeasureably if you are a blonde female pow. Not all male pow's get raped.

I've always believed that women who enter the military, having spent their lives as a "little sister" to a "big brother(s)" are the most combat ready soldiers on the face of the earth.......and I just bet Jessica Lynch has a big brother(s)!!!

I voted for Christian. I think it was 1984 or 1986? He may have even run twice - - I don't exactly remember. But yeah, I wish he would give it another go. Didn't Greenwood come into office swearing he supported term limits and he would only serve a couple of terms? Hahahaha.....
