The Washington Post ^ | April 3, 2003 | Susan Schmidt and Vernon Loeb

Posted on 04/02/2003 7:40:30 PM PST by John H K

Pfc. Jessica Lynch, rescued Tuesday from an Iraqi hospital, fought fiercely and shot several enemy soldiers after Iraqi forces ambushed the Army's 507th Ordnance Maintenance Company, firing her weapon until she ran out of ammunition, U.S. officials said yesterday.

No, but I've followed every "babes in battle" thread I've seen and participated in many...I'd guess around 20 so far and that is my observation.

What's yours?

It would make a nice poll...talk to JR if you've got pull around here.

However, I don't want teenaged girls blowing the head off anyone -- for the girl's sake, and for society's sake.

So I guess you just tell girls to lie back and enjoy it? Because it would be wrong for them to fight back?

You heard wrong, they were listening to chatter about her made by her captors. At least tell the story correctly.

I don't believe in PC-ized "soft " standards for women in combat. I think women should be able to serve, though way way way far from the front lines.

I am thinking that after undergoing the torture she undoubtedly went through, most men would have been whimpering and crying also. We leave no one behind, it has nothing to do with her gender.

Nonsensical? Only if you define nonsensical as "poking large holes in the tattered logic that I'm using".

LOL! So, you buy INTO evolution? That explains why women being shot up, captured and tortured by enemies is just fine and dandy with you...

You give me much more power than I have. I never made an exception. Its not in my power. Remember, women as nurses have always been on the battlefield, but not as members of the military.

My concern is the defense of the United States. If you look at the recent history of women in conjunction with our military, you will see dismaying record. Women have been treated with special deference, and yet are some of the biggest whiners and complainers. They want special treatment, and the standards are lowered for women.

Tell me, why should standards be different for women? Can you answer that?

I would teach my daughter to shot fast and straight and blow the head off anyone trying to rape her.

You argue poorly. One has nothing to do with the other.

I think women have a place in the military more like before the feminazis cowed the Defense Department in the 70s.

I don't like women in the academies (I've seen firsthand the damage at VMI), on ships (where the problems are well known) or in risk areas of combat.

None of my views diminish my joy that this young lady survived. Whether she is a hero or not...I don't know. She is damn tuff apparently and very very lucky.

You equate a woman in combat with a woman being raped? Do we need to go on here?

First off- stop referring to a violent combat engagement as a performance (you're really starting to peeve the fighting man inside of me)

Second off- stop trying to diminish the conduct of a soldier wounded multiple times in a violent combat engagement by comparing this soldier's conduct to Audie Murphy's conduct, it's sarcasm in the form of an exaggeration.

Jessica Lynch paid her dues.

You said: At any rate, PFC. Lynch may have kept fighting until she ran out of ammo, I'm just saying its more likely she did not. I hope I'm wrong and I hope the Army produces evidence supporting her memory of the events.

Why is it more likely she didn't run out of ammo ? What is so hard for you to grasp about this concept ? The evidence of imminent death in this violent combat engagement is overwhelming, and multiple combat wounds inflicted upon Jessica are a fact. It would behoove oneself to unload as much ammo downrange, as one could possibly deliver, upon an enemy that is trying to kill you

Does the Air Force have to provide a witness for you to believe the pilot of a single engine fighter jet that is shot down, emptied his weapon of ammo before being captured, as he fought to the death ?

Isn't it also possible for facts to be seared into the memory (psyche) of an individual, minute detail by minute detail ?

Police officers do it all the time.
